Description (In the Kelvin Universe...)

Stardate 2270.2: The U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) was recalled to Starbase Yorktown after the completion of its five-year mission under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. Just a few short minutes after docking, Kirk found himself in Admiral Paris' office where she explained that Enterprise would be assigned to Yorktown for about twenty months during which the Enterprise's hull and warp drive would be refitted. When Kirk asked about a temporary assignment, Paris promoted Kirk on the spot to Rear Admiral without explanation and with no option to refuse. Torn by the sudden removal from starship command, Kirk found himself as the Starbases newest commander and began to slowly settle in. Eventually, Kirk managed to confront his superior officer; Admiral Nagura where it was revealed to him that Admiral Paris retired and she recommended Kirk as her replacement. Kirk also was notified that his former officers; Commander Spock and Lieutenant Nyota Uhura both took a leave of absence to New Vulcan, Dr. McCoy resigned his commission in Starfleet and relocated to Starbase Yorktown to work in the privet sector and Mr. Chekov was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to the U.S.S. Reliant as it's Security Chief.
By Stardate 2270.95, Admiral Kirk recommended Commander Willard Decker for promotion to the rank of Captain to Fleet Admiral Nagura. Nagura was hesitant at Kirk's recommendation due to the fact Decker harbored resentment towards Kirk and blamed him for the death of his father, the late Commodore Matthew Decker of the U.S.S. Constellation.  Despite his recommendation, Kirk conveyed his feelings of envy towards Decker, telling the younger officer his hopes of commanding a starship again in the future. The now-captain Decker went on to oversee the extensive refit of the Enterprise throughout its entire eighteen months along with Commander Sonak, who replaced Spock as First Officer and Science Officer. Later on, Kirk managed to convince the now-Doctor Christine Chapel to return to the Enterprise by offering her the position as Chief Medical Officer. Sulu, Scotty, Hendorf, and Keenser remained on the Enterprise-A. Although they did their best to acclimate to Captain Decker; Scotty filed an official complaint with Admiral Kirk sitting Decker was arrogant and didn't take the advice of his senior officers prior to making command decisions.

By Stardate 2273.8: Starfleet Intelligence reported that communications within the Klingon territory went dark and roomers within the Empire started to circulate about a dark cloud that "digitized" an entire armada and at least 3 star-systems. Admiral Nagura ordered a fleet-wide Yellow-Alert and placed all starships along the Klingon/Federation Neutral Zone on standby combat alert. Later that stardate, Comms Station Epsilon XI intercepted a Klingon distress signal from the I.K.V. Amar that a massive energy cloud had destroyed two other of its escorts. The Amar reported that the energy cloud was an enormous power field that sensor scans can't penetrate. In less than sixty-two hours away from Earth and with no other starship in interception range, Admiral Kirk ordered a rush job on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Shortly after the elimination of the Klingon vessels, the cloud passed into Federation space near the Epsilon IX station, which was able to perform limited scans on it, although most of its scans were deflected back the Comms Stations crew was able, however, to determine that it measured a 2 AU's. They also detected a null reading at the center of the cloud indicating a solid form or vessel of some kind. Unfortunately, V'ger appeared to interpret Epsilon IX's scans as a hostile act and eliminated the station in the same manner as the Klingon Armada. This lead Fleet Admiral Nagura to reassign the U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Kirk, although he had to take a grade reduction to Captain.
When asked who would tell Decker of the news, Kirk said he would.
