All paintings and samples were done by me. I really do hope this is helpful. Let me know if anything requires further explanation! I don't think I'm the master at fur or anything, but it is something I'm asked a lot. If you look at my older works, such as these: fav.me/d5uygmd , fav.me/d5xmrwx , fav.me/d5lepdr - you can see that I too had a lot of trouble with fur XDDDD

Finally a simple easy to follow guide for drawing fur. AND you took the time to explain what some of the terms mean. Well done and now faved in tutorials!!

THIS. This is exactly what I was wanting to know! Thank you for putting time into making this. Once I've finished my Asari I will have to give this a try. I'll let you know results

Now I know I've just asked you TONNES of questions about fur. But having gone through this. I'm now curious about how you do the eyes. I feel like it would be very different to how I do mine.

Yay I'm glad it was what you wanted ^-^

Eyes are pretty easy. I fill in the eye with a base colour. Then I add shadows, fill in the pupil. I add midtones, then some lesser highlights. Blend. The white/glare on the eyes is the last thing I do, just with a basic round brush and almost white colour.

Sometimes, eyes are more detailed because they are viewed closer up. If I needed to add "strands" to the eyes, I'd use the same round brush at a lower opacity and build up the strands. To make the eyes pop, I often use an overlay layer and test out colours. A teal or turquoise colour often produces interesting results, especially over green or blue

Again, ask away. I'm totally fine with it XD

Yes, that's very different to how I tend to do them. I usually use the dodge and burn tool. I find that they are really good for eyes because you can just change between their shadows, midtones and highlights settings and it changes what kind of colour shift it has on the base colour. It's also useful to slowly make the pupil larger if you need to.
It's actually rather interesting, no one I've talked to on here (yet) actually use the dodge and burn tools.

I used to use burn and dodge a lot but now I very rarely use them. They both can produce odd, unnatural colours. I remember working on a painting, and I grew very frustrated because the burn was producing a greenish-hue, and the dodge was producing a more orange hue. I looked at some tutorials, and they mentioned that this is an issue with them so I just stopped using them.

There's nothing really wrong with using them if you do so properly. I like that I have more control in the colours I lay down by not using them though. I used to use a lot of tools and specialty brushes (used to only use smudge and blur to blend), but I challenged myself to using mostly the round brush and my paintings actually came out better that way o.O

As you paint, you come across new techniques and new ways of doing things. Everyone uses different things also. I know when I was trying to get better at fur, this deviant posted a tutorial that used a special brush- the results were incredible! I tried it and it look just awful. Everything in time and in practice

That is very true! I've got a couple of specialty brushes, haven't migrated to solely the round brush. I find the round brush doesn't leave a good line. Literally looks like circles next to each other. Haven't discovered how to change it to what I want yet.
When working in black and white I find dodge and burn give me the best outcomes so far, especially with a soft-hard round brush

Ah so you start Grayscale. I tried that before but didn't really get how to add the colour xD I should try again some time.Β

What program do you use? The round brush for me is just one smooth line. I do still use some brushes, mostly to save time- like speckle brushes. It's mostly just to challenge myself xD

Haha, my colour pieces I don't start grey scale because I too cannot work out how to add the colour well. But if my piece is going to stay black and white then I'll use the burn and dodge tools.
I'm on Photoshop, I have krita as well but it doesn't work well on my tablet.

Ah I see! You should be able to tweak the round brush so it doesn't do that circle thing. One of the settings must be off.

If you are interested in the round brush we can try to fix it or I can try to upload the one I use xD

It's just the hard brush, so I use the soft brush a lot for some shading and just increase the hardness when I need to. If it isn't fully hard it seems to work ok

I'm not sure how to tag people on here. But here's the speed paint I did, and I linked your tutorial.

I'm actually working on a speed paint at the moment that your tutorial has been instrumental in being able to detail. I won't be able to give it the time required to give it the detail that you go into, but I think it's coming along quite well. So Thank you again for putting the effort into this.

I'll show you the piece once I've finished
