While people were debating the potential dangers of the hypnosis feature for virtual role playing games, they were overlooking another danger that had already proven itself to be very real. Briar did not play many VRPGs. He used the virtual world mainly to socialize. More and more of his time was spent there and he was not even aware of it.

When he first entered, he selected random features for his avatar. He ended up as a gorgeous teen girl about the same age he was before. This made him feel really good. Since Briar was an androgynous name, he could continue to use it without altering anything.

He went to virtual clubs, attended virtual meetings, and took part in virtual events using his new avatar. What was called the real world seemed dismal by comparison so he spent most of his time in the virtual world. Most of his friends were also in the virtual world because of all the time he spent there. None of them even thought to guess he was actually a boy.

Virtual shopping may have been the biggest problem of all. Briar spent real money on all kinds of virtual outfits for his female avatar. Outside the virtual world, the only thing he had to show for it was his ever decreasing savings. Soon it would reach a point where he would be unable to pay for his virtual lifestyle. When that happened, he did not know what he would do.

These problems existed well before virtual reality but virtual reality had made them even worse. The hypnosis feature made them worse still. For Briar there was still time, but for others the trap had already been sprung.

They were unable to pay for virtual items but too addicted to virtual reality to leave. Someone provided such people with jobs in the virtual world. The currency they received could only be used in the virtual world which kept them there even longer.

For the time being, Briar could continue to flaunt expensive looking virtual items but he or someone else needed to become aware of his problem before it was too late.
