Description OKAY, this is how much I love you all.

FULL VIEW, obviously, IT'S HUUUUUGE.

And like, because I have gotten a lot of people asking how I shaded/made my lines so sharp/etc. So, this was overdue.

Forgot to mention in it that I use Adobe Photoshop CS3 and use a Wacom Intuos2 tablet.

I might end up doing a finishing tutorial, to show different background techniques I use, gradient overlays, sharpening, down-sizing and compression, adding borders, etc. Though that stuff isn't all that interesting.

I really hope people find this useful, and if there's anything that isn't made clear in this, or if someone has any sort of problems following it, just note me and ask. :] I would loooove to help.

I'm no professional! But people tell me my art looks professional sometimes, so hahaha, there you go.

Enjoy~~~~

Awesomeness.

LOL this is about as close as I get to "gradient" shading myself.

I just call it that because it's easier than "softphotoshopbrushonlowflow shading" XD

Actually... this WHOLE THING is really close to my process XD

Of course it hasn't deviated a terrible amount from ~tigrin 's super-old tutorial so. x)

BUT. I use linear dodge a whole lot, but I never thought about using linear burn. I AM OFF TO TRY IT

only not really

perhaps when I get home

x)

I think your tutorial was one of the ones that got me started using layers. Like, the white shadow layer with multiply as a blend mode. X] I think it was like, a combination of your's, Tig's, and... whatever other ones I ended up picking up around from artists who I look up to. I had no idea you used the same faux-gradient technique though. D: Great minds, man, LOL. If you want me to cite you as my initial inspiration, I so will. CX

I like the way linear burn looks for darker colors. C: I need to like.. figure out a more unique process, LOOOL.

Awesome 8D I'm just getting into that sort of gradient-shading myself, so this sort of stuff is good to know.

Great! CB This is my.. fakegradient shading, LOL. It's how I used to color before figuring out real gradient shading. I thought it was a bit more interesting. :] Glad it could help!!

Um this is totally awesome! I know quite a bit about photoshop coloring and I still learned some new tricks here :3 I also really liked seeing your process and the picture you're using is adorable here. Great job putting this togeter, I want to try out this method and make ya proud!

Also I would love to see you do that tutorial with other techniques because I'd say my weakest thing is successfully doing background integrations and effects. So yea thumbs up to that idea!

One thing that was a little unclear from this one that I'd like to clarify, you said "duplicate shadows, fill with white, set opacity as the same. use BIG airbrush to soften edges and shadows and increase depth" Is the big airbrush referring to the eraser or painting on more white (or another color?) Just checkin'!

Thanks for making this, babe

combustication In reply to Rupee [2008-07-21 14:44:32 +0000 UTC]

The big airbrush is a paintbrush, using the same color as the first shadows. It's the one step that's really hard to explain, because I just.. started doing it with no real rhyme or reason. XD I just liked the look of combining the cell-esque shading with a softer airbrush shading. So your basically use the airbrush to lightly soften the areas that would be in the most shadow. It deepens the "cell" shading, so it doesn't look as flat.

Sorry that was confusing! But I'm really glad you like it. :] And I'd loooooove to see what you end up doing if you try it!!

Yeah, I'll totally do another one on different techniques, and I'll state which ones I learn from work. X] There's nothing really new or ground braking, but I'm learning a lot of shortcuts I never knew about.

So yaaaay. I'm happy you like it/actually found it useful! Your welcome!
