Very good. It's nice to get a darker tone. If you could point me to your reasons, that would be nice.

Alright.

I just don't like the plot (Removing pony's cutie marks is wrong and lying about it is also wrong.) Everything else was fine, just not the plot.

Okay. Personally I liked the premise and the villain. It really got me thinking of what magic is capable of in this world, and other peoples/ponies philosophies. It was just really interesting personally.

I would give this a C, it was so predictable and boring. It was basically MLP version on
The Interview, it's the same story essentially. Worst of the premieres I have seen, but not terrible by any means.

In my book, even an F grade would be too good for these episodes. These were he worst episodes ever in my opinion, and I never want to see them again.

First, they were waaaaay too dark and depressing for me to want to associate with canon MLP. I watch this show for the FUN, not drama and sadness.Β
Second, I firmly believe in the Greek/Roman ideal that nothing is more sacred than someone's identity, so any episode that includes someponyΒ (or creature) taking away an important part of a pony's identity immediately goes on my list of episodes I will never watch again. So far the list includes:Β
Return of Harmony, part 1: Taking away Rainbow and Fluttershy's wings (mostly Rainbow's) and Rarity and Twilight's horns (mainly Twilight's; Shy and Rarity could conceivably live as Earth Ponies, but Dash and Twi need their wings and horn respectively to perform their special talents)Β
Canterlot Wedding: Literal identity theftΒ
Magic Duel: Taking away Pinkie's smile is inexcusableΒ
Twilight's Kingdom: This one kinda speaks for itself, since Tirek's whole modus operandi is to steal the power of others and use it for himself.
The Cutie Map: I don't think this one really needs any explaining about how it got on the list.Β

Is nice to see i am not the only one that think, eve when it was nice to see a diferent villan, and not apower hungry i want to destroy the world, but it was boring, slow pase, i have a hard time to end it, yes the animation was good and the music was more or less, but it was meh, sorry but i think mlp fim will not return to the beauty of season 1 and 2, the mesage was good but, i dont know

Its good to see that everyone is enjoying season 5. As much as I wanted to like the season 5 opener I couldn't. For me the season 5 opener although somewhat dark was one of the most boring openers out of all 5. The previous 4 had excitement and very good pacing and kept you interested. This one....was just dull and slow. I had a hard time finishing it cause i was bored Now the music and the animation were great as ever and loved the new song. Starlight Glimmer although she has a cool design didn't really seem like a villain to me. She was more like Trixie and the conflict could have been avoided if pinkie pie just kept quiet...(Wish they kept her pinkamania side instead but oh well)

This had a lot of potential and it just ended as just slow and dull in some parts. With the third episode being a nice refresher Im hoping that the rest of the season gets better ^^Β

I liked the series taking a darker tone, if only for an episode. It reminded me quite a bit of the creepypasta game, Story of the Blanks mixed with the Jonestown compound. Unfortunately, the moment you realize that the episode(s) [is/are] a condensed version of the first season of Legend of Korra, it starts to fall apart and become predictable and, while borrowing inspiration from North Korea and Jonestown in MLP was a ballsy move for the series, it pales in comparison to the darker moments of Legend of Korra, which ended in an onscreen murder/suicide.

Is it just me or does StarLight Glimmer sound like they just modified Sunset Shimmer's name, use pretty much the same color scheme as Aria Blaze, and the episode reminds me of the Equalists of the Legend of Korra.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

deli73123 In reply to ZanyOnePip [2015-04-11 18:38:58 +0000 UTC]

Well, to be fair, Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle are already synonyms, but yeah, it does seem to be a bit strange. I suspect the general idea of light of some sort is a common name scheme for unicorns, and Twilight, Sunset, and Starlight all seem to be very talented in magic, though they clearly use it to different means.
As for the episode, the government Starlight Glimmer had created seems to bear some pretty deep similarities to communist governments such as the Soviet Union.
Also, I could be completely wrong about this, and perhaps I'm just projecting, but it could almost be seen as a protest about where the American government is currently going...

A fairly graded and concise review of the episode, Cuddlepug. Thank you. And yes, Sunset Starlight Shimmer Glimmer's ebil, villainous vision is low-key compared to the establishment of a power clique bent on world domination. In the hands of a masterful writer, it certainly won't weaken the impact of her threat to the characters and their beloved Equestria, and may come down in other parts of the world like a plague for which they must embark further (while Spike and Big Apple stay at home to prep for the upcoming Super Bowl, because what else would the boys do?). Such a small dream can be taken to dangerous measures for sure. Too bad we still don't know what the satisfaction of achieving "true friendship" is for her, other than just a small sociological experiment, but which might still lead us to a legitimately insane future scenario the next time we see her...

I'll be honest: I was howling with laughter for 10 minutes at the brief description of the ponies and the 'equal sign' cutie marks on the episode summary itself (communism is an irrational but amusing thorn of a topic in my side).

The only bad thing I can say about this premiere is the continued misconstruction of the concept of cutie marks in this show. It was long ago that Season Prime established cutie marks to be nothing more than a set of really colorful (and flattering) tattoos -- magically-placed badges on ponies' posteriors to signify their coming of age and into themselves. Badges define an achievement, and hold no power over your sole purpose in life. By that definition, a cutie mark's function is about as useful as interpreting a zodiac sign. You could brainwash a group of people into thinking that their driving skills would disappear with their licences, and that simply isn't true. It was hard to suspend my disbelief at the sudden turnaround the girls' personalities took once they were stripped of their butt-blings. Eyerolling as they all were, AJ's dilemma was especially grating (at the risk of being insulting to the countryfolk, I will not clarify).

I'll admit, this was a pretty good start to the new season, better than I expected at least. Β I'll admit, though, it did get a little iffy during the final act, especially when Starlight made the rookie mistake of leaving her escape hole uncovered. Β Then again, this show has always had plot contrivances like that, so I guess I can let that slide to a certain degree. Β Still a good start, though.

Well, if you would like my explanation, they just seem to let villain run rampant each time, and they never seem to think "oh this will never come back to bite us, ever.'

And WHAT kind of pegacorn LETS her CUTIE MARK GET STOLEN, and on that note, WHY DID her friends ALLOW that to happen, "HOLY MOTHER FAUSTICORN, Twilight just got her cuite mark stolen, better sit here flabbergasted."
not a single attempt to prevent this, not one.

The plot of these episodes was actually based on a short story called "Harrison Bergeron", a dystopian fiction story where the government equalizes everyone by using "handicaps" to make them mediocre at everything, similar to how Starlight Glimmer takes ponies' cutie marks away to equalize them.

Meh, Fairly Odd Parents did this exact episode and got the point across in 11 minutes.

I'm actually glad that this show is starting to wear off. At first, I just thought it was just myself that lost interest but it looks like alot of brony Youtubers are moving on to different content.

Also, looks like this show's doing the generic "adventuring somewhere, beat up the bad guy/solve a problem, and do it again" thing. So yea, I think we're ready for everyone to love Pokemon and Sonic again... though that'll never be again.
