It was a backbreaking job, quite literally speaking. Hailee was brave and used to hard work, but her slender teen-aged frame was hardly that of a seasoned gravedigger. After a while, she had to step down into the hole to get more leverage, but the shovel felt heavier with every load of sticky clay. Her shoulders and thighs were killing her, and the skin of her hands was blistering, chafed by the tool’s coarse handle. Yet she gritted her teeth and scooped the muck unrelentingly, her breath rasping in the morning fog.
Finally, she pulled out a last massive chunk and was satisfied that the grave was deep enough. Just wording it in her mind triggered a renting sob, but she knew she had a job to finish first, the sobs would have to wait. She climbed out of the hole and tugged on the shroud as gently and considerately as she could at first. She soon realized that this was not an occasion for gentleness and consideration though. She pulled harder then and clumsily rolled the unwieldy sheath into the trench.
She didn’t want time to think about it, not yet. But she dreaded for it to end. She couldn’t bear to see that empty stretch ahead of her…. And she grabbed the shovel again… With a vengeance… Until all that was left to see was that tiny little cross…and her scarf…. The scarf he’d given her and told her to wear at all times…until she knew…
She sat facing him now… his cross… her scarf… Hailee was an orphan…Again…
