Meanwhile, in a fairly similar ramshackle abode at the other end of the wasteland, hope was not on the daily roster anymore. Heaven knows she had tried, turning her growing despair into a mad frenzy, standing by his side night and day, fiercely willing him to slay the gnawing beast, one more time, just one more time, alternately praying and cursing whichever God may have been available.
Yet she knew. She had known for a couple of weeks now that this last battle was lost.
Hailee didn’t cry. In the world that had been hers for the past five years, tears meant a waste of energy. Jack had taught her that, along with pretty much everything she knew. She couldn’t let him down. Not now.
She had led such a little girl’s perfect dreamlife before… But those pictures had started to fade. That memorable weekend when Dad had taken both his girls on a surprise trip to the Vieux Carré. Fresh pastries at the Croissant d’Or on a radiant Sunday morning. With giggles, four-years old Hailee and her Mom had flaunted their perfect French with this slight Belgian lilt that Daddy always teased them about….
Then the sudden move to Seattle. ‘It’s a now or never thing’ Daddy had pleaded, but the girls were far from convinced. The winters were long and dreary in the North, and their music wasn’t quite the same… They moved to Seattle within three weeks. Louis Bellefleur could do miracles with his eyes… Unfortunately, the harmonics on the Seattle scene were to turn downright gruesome on that fatal October day four years later.
Which was precisely the day when the dying man lying in front of her now had entered her life.
