Another strenuous heaving of his exhausted chest. The pain was permanent and excruciating. Had been for days on end. One agonizing sleepless day after another.
‘Won’t be much longer now’, he thought, almost listlessly. Which would have been a blessing, had the vicious curse chosen to track him down a few years earlier, like it had done for his dad and uncle. Both had been sturdy, hard working men, both had been buried in the little cemetery on the edge of the village before they were forty years old. The doctors – there were still doctors in those days, he scoffed inwardly – had been quite straightforward about it. ‘It’s a nasty strain we can’t cure at this point. Once it’s declared, it will wipe you out within two years at most’.
Jack had gotten the message then. He knew he was to be the next Rodgers on the dreadful list. When he turned forty and still felt like a Raging Bull of sorts, the thought started to creep into his mind that maybe destiny had taken an unexpected quirky turn…
But it hadn’t. It was just biding its time. So it could make its triumphal entrance at the worst possible moment.
Those incredible five years had been such a blessing. Even now, as what little energy that still remained was deserting him and their parting time was getting close, he kept an incredibly vivid reminiscence of the discordant tunes filling his ears as he ran looking for shelter on that ghostly day of doom and bliss. The absurd noises of war and destruction, shrill and strident and thunderous, kept at bay by the weakest lonely little birdsong fluttering in his ear. Her warm breath and her pounding heart as he carried her snugly wrapped in his arms through the smoke and the dust. That day when the mighty walls of the city came crumbling down. That day when a miracle child was born to him. Hailee.
