She couldn’t tell how long she had sat there on the hard and damp ground, on the edge of Jack Rodgers’ grave. Talking to him, in that casual way they used to talk to each other in the evenings, assessing what the day had brought them, looking forward to the next one.
But his voice was getting weaker, and after a moment she couldn’t hear but a whisper, which could well have been the wind in the branches of the nearby oaktree. The hand she’d be holding on to in her mind got colder and colder, as the man who’d saved nine-year-old little Hailee from certain death five years before, that same man who’d given her the tools and the skills she would need to survive and the fighting spirit that would be her motive to go on, that wonderful man took his final leave and bowed to his heart-broken crowd of one….
She got up and grabbed the gun. She walked a few steps and turned her tight-lipped little face to the grave one last time. All the sorrow in the world glistened in the little tear that would be her ultimate thank you note to Jack Rodgers…
‘Walk north to freedom’. His last words. Her motto now.
