Description
Lake TekapoNew Zealand
The Church of the Good Shepherd is undoubtedly one of the prime locations for photography in New Zealand. I was impressed with the starry skies for the nights we were there but excluding the church, Tekapo is probably not in the top bracket of places we visited on our recent trip - which is saying alot considering how beautiful it is. I wanted to try to include the Milky Way with this church which ended up taking 14 vertical shots. The 5dmk3 performed very well at the iso shot (3200) and I am now confident to print these shots where before, even with the 5dmk2, many of the shots were admittedly just for fun.

This is beautiful, it was well worth taking 14 shots to include the Milky Way. This picture is one of the best I've seen in a long time.

This is just simply amazing, I would not mind trying to count the number of stars but I think I would not make it to ten before I would stop counting and forget what number I was on and had to start over I could stare at this all night if I had such a view from my backyard!

Hehe - ask the lucky residents of Tekapo if they just stare up every clear night

They are very lucky. I can pretty much count on one hand the number of times I've seen the milky way. There is just too much light pollution, unless you are lucky enough to live out in the wilderness and even then, the urban sprawl is oozing outward to there. My parents live in a location where it is possible to see the MW on a clear night but they are slowly losing it, they'll soon have a Walmart just about in their backyard. Sad and pathetic. Most people hear milky way and think a candy bar.

it's a side effect of having to compress 180 degrees of images into a scene through distortion !

Which spot did you select for metering in this picture?

For night images, I don't rely on metering (horribly inaccurate for night shots!)- just prior experience. With the 5dmk2 I used to shoot these at iso1600 but with the cleaner images at 3200 with 5dmk3, I've been able to add more depth of field to the images my closing the aperture slightly up to F4 for these shots

That sounds complicated, so you just set all in M and try it?
The mkIII would be a nice Toy for me too

What sort of lens are you using to beable to capture the night sky? or is it a specific objective?

It helps to have a lens that opens up to F2.8 , or to have a camera with very good iso capability - it so happens that I'm lucky enough to have both which made this shot possible - 16-35mm F2.8 lens
