well here it is now! The final lesson!
I hope you all have been able to get something out of these tutorials.

Isn't it that は (wa) is a topic marker, not subject marker?
The topic is who/what the sentence is talking about.
The subject is who/what is doing the action described by the verb.
The topic can be different than the subject.

Now it's time for some Kanji lessons

I didn't know about the -yo as exclamation mark! It's great to learn something new.

Finally! The w's.

Arigatou gozaimasu, senpai. It's all because of you that I'm finally taking learning a new language seriously - and I stress finally. Went out and bought a Japanese-English dictionary to keep me motivated; even made flash cards for the 60+ characters; have numerous papers with my practice writings. As you said, knowing the individual characters is one thing, and in itself is a great accomplishment, but it certainly doesn't stop there. Will say this though: "drawing" the hiragana characters is one of the coolest practices ever!

I'm glad that I've been able to help you so much.
There's a sense of pride that comes from being able to learn 60+ characters, right?

As for the "drawing" I know what you mean. I've had some fun myself with some very messy oil pastels and a few characters that I randomly decided to draw on paper.
There's nothing more fun than bright colors.

Teacher, would you like to see some of my handwriting, maybe even let me know if it's legible?

Hmm, I could send it to you through email... or if you like, you can see it here on dA: [link] I'm pretty sure I'm going to do more uploads of my "pretty handwriting." Hehehe.

your hand writing is very nice and legible. overall I think that you have it down very well. te, fu, ke, e and n are a little off. But it's understandable considering a few of those are dificuilt. Mu and su are good, especially since I think those two are some the hardest to learn. keep up the good work!

I think your even better than people I know who have even had class instruction.

はい! ありがとう! This is an old practice sheet, but I’ve been working on those characters, in fact. Especially ’fu’ and ’ke’ which has changed considerably, hopefully better. If I upload a newer version, I’ll be sure to show you.

I should, I actually already brainstormed for that a bit. Though I don't think I'll have time to make any lessons until after my school quarter ends. But definitely expect more from me in the future!

Wow, that's great! Thanks for finishing it

I only have one question: Why are mangas being read from right to left, if the Japaneses write from left to right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

emm2341 In reply to Neta1229 [2010-02-14 19:17:17 +0000 UTC]

Japanese write both horizontally and vertically. In Manga, the text is written vertically so everything is from right to left.
The only time I've seen horizontal text is on Signs and things like worksheets or documents where you have to fill stuff in.
Manga and Novels are all written vertically.

Of course I have seen Japanese books written horizontally, but in such cases the book is something specific like an Origami instructional book where horizontal text is more practical.

Thank you for your explanation ^^

KodamaHime In reply to Neta1229 [2010-02-14 18:39:05 +0000 UTC]

Originally, Japanese was written top to bottom, and read right to left. It's been a bit more westernized as it is also acceptable to write it horizontally, and read it left to right.

If you look in mangas that are written in Japanese, some still follow the top-to-bottom, right-to-left traditional writing. :]
