Are you a certified teacher, because this is by far the most challenging, yet curious lesson I've ever encountered! (thats a good thing)

I actually found some exercises a while ago at one of my favorite sites.
You can find them here

It's not very much but it should help.

These lessons are really cool!
But, I was wondering if you could make a list of Japanese words eith their Hiragana(sp?) next to it, I really want to learn the language and spelling. ^__^
Arigato! (sp?)

If you go on the internet, there are tons of places that offer you lists of Japanese words. Most of the sites I'm thinking about are for beginners but they're still good lists to learn off of. However most of these lists spell the words using romaji.
Rather than giving you a list of words, how about you take the Romaji words they give you and try to translate them into Hiragana?
Then you can show it to me if you like and I'll tell you if it's spelled right or not.
It would be a good learning experience, no?
I have a small workbook for learning Hiragana that I've been putting together and once I get to summer vacation I'll be able to finish it and put it up.
The workbook will have tons of example words you can use. So maybe that will help.
ganbatte ne!
Good luck!
p.s. It's Arigatou with a 'u' at the end.
Please feel free to tell me if you have any more suggestions. I'm surprised how many people just want lists of words.

I want to thank you SO MUCH for these. I've tried learning the hiragana characters before, but I could only ever keep about 30 memorized (excluding ones that start with the sounds like "g", "z", "d", etc.).
I love the little exercises you have, they're so much fun. ^^
I'm going off to read more!

I stop putting exercises in the lessons after lesson two but there's a little workbook I've been making. Hopefully that will help.
Anything to make learning Japanese easier!

Hi These are good tutorials! XD. I read a few of them :3 But I noticed you didn't note the dakuten/handakuten on them...the ones I read anyway XD
When I was learning my kana my teacher made us learn it at the same time. like a two birds with one stone type of thing. Are you going to do the dakuten & the handakuten in a separate tutorial?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
emm2341 In reply to KyoKyoChii [2009-04-18 16:47:23 +0000 UTC]
Yes I teach you those later.
I didn't realize that they had a name "Dakuten"
My teacher taught us slightly differently. She didn't go over the extra sounds until after we learned everything else.
My teacher isn't Japanese so I realize that maybe some of her knowledge is limited and so we didn't call them "dakuten"
We actually called them "tenten" and "maru"
Now I'm going to ask her about calling it "Dakuten"!
Thanks for the new piece of information. Just when you think you've learned it all something new comes up

Ahh! Thanks for putting this up here - this is bound to help me learn Japanese. But I'm somewhat confused about how you read/write the hiragana.
Uh, is writing and reading in Japanese the same? Right to left?
I'm getting a bit mixed up on some. With your example [Hill], I can't tell if it's [oka] or [kao]. Could you explain this to me, please?
Thank you!

In the last lesson I'll explain how reading sentences works.
Japanese read both right to left and left to right depending on how the sentences are positioned.
The words I give you are read left to right.
Thanks for pointing this out to me. Please ask if you have anymore questions.

Really awesome that you make these tutorials! I love languages, and Japanese is one of the around a dozen (no, really) ones I want to learn! Well, I started today, and this is how long I've got, really xD I have, however, looked through the other lessons, and it seems really interesting - can't wait till I get to the "tsu" double consonant. Anyway - keep making these!

Hmm, I thought "big" is "ookii" (to lazy to figure out how to write in hiragana other than by hand, sorry ), but the Wakan dictionary claims both are okay, only claims "ooki" is "na-adj" while "ookii" is "adj". I didn't know anything can be both kinds of adjectives...
Anyway, at this point it might be good to tell people that they won't learn classic written hiragana from printed text - some characters like "ki" and "sa" might confuse them later...
(Sorry if you already did somewhere in the next lessons, I read them one after another...)

umm...sorta confused...how did u get from love to ai, blue to aoi, red to akai, and so on? I still am not sure what romaji and Hiragana is...help? sorry..

Have you looked at lesson 0?
It's not very good (sort of my rough draft for the lessons)but it explains everything about romaji.
Basically, romaji is a way for beginners to know the pronunciation of a Japanese word without having to know Hiragana.
If there's something I need to explain better just tell me and I'll elaborate more.
