Description Wha-? enchan made a tutorial?
You better believe it! I spent all day on it See what I do when my webcomic is on hiatus?
For those of you who have asked me how it's done, I present to you the step-by-step manga tutorial~~~!
It's very unprofessional...T___T I'm sorry...I do hope it helps though.
And that tachikiri guide I tell you I'll provide here is here-> [link]
Full view to see the tutorial....It's huuuuge O_O Gomenne~~T^T
The mini comic features my characters from the webcomic MAJESTY -> [link]
I know it doesn't make sense...but I had to come up with something fast enough for the tutorial. (It might make sense if you know the characters ;;;; *loser* )
Good Luck~! And enjoy!
Required Tools: The media shown in the first step of the tutorial, Photoshop 5 or higher and ComicWorks.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for all the favs! I'm happy you found this helpful in some sorta way XD;; I edited my site address in the description...and maybe one day I'll fix the address on the tutorial---but it is wrong XD....Remember~~~>enchantma.com!
ANOTHER EDIT: Okay, so the Tachikiri guide isn't working...Nevermind that. Every publishing company has it's own guides anyway but the standard is that the page dimensions should follow a 2:3 ratio.
MORE EDIT: Thank you, for bringing this to my attention but you can find the Tokyopop template if you Google "mechspec5"...She says, "The second link, a pdf file, has the template at the bottom of it"
Now please stop asking me where it is XD;;
FINAL EDIT (I hope): I HAVE A NEW TUTORIAL THAT SHOULD ANSWER WHAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. Please check it out BEFORE asking questions. Thanks!

You know, this might be just what I've been looking for to help me, not the tutorial, I mean, ir's a great tut, but I'm glad you showed that little mannequin model thing, that's just what I need to help me with anatomy on my original characters, where do I get one? Thanks so much

I know IKEA sells those...but I bought mine at a local art store It's my best friend...lol. Also, for anatomy reference, check out Volume 4 of the How To Draw Manga series...it's really awesome!

Is the tachakiri paper thing supposed to be that big?

I clicked on the link and there was a really small image of it. I clicked on the icon in the right, bottom-hand corner and it got humongo!

BTW, this tutorial is VERY helpful. It's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much. ^_^

I didn't know most manga artist wrote the script down first...!

Do you just write what each character says, or do you write the whole story and some side-ideas?

I plan to make my own manga someday, so I must know! ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enchantma In reply to SJNero [2006-04-16 08:44:03 +0000 UTC]

The tachikiri is supposed to be printed out. The resolution is high, so it looks big on screen...but it should fit ok on 8.5x11 paper printed out
I'm really happy the tutorial was helpful! Thank you for telling me so
Yes, the smartest way to gather your thoughts together is by writing them down. They organize themselves out as you plan the story further.
I write an actual script as follows:
Character A: Hello! (walks in through school door which slides--cheerful expression, places bag down in second panel and Character B approaches A)
Character B: (right hand on stomach as he places his left hand upon A's bag) I hope you brought good food, cuz I'm starving!

I usually include little sketches to remind myself later exactly how I imagined the scene in my head ^^ That really does help and I always thank myself for that, cuz if I don't, I get stuck trying to understand what I meant. I keep the script very detailed also so I can illustrate the panels just as planned.
I go more into script planning on my faq section on my site...Feel free to check out what's now the last question and answer on the site. I'd go more n depth but I've answered this so many times XD lol
Good luck with your manga! You have strong will power, and you're eager to learn...I know you'll do great

Oh wow. this was very helpful for me. I like to tone digitally but I was completley unaware of the manga paper trick! I don't have comiworks but it still helped me all the same X3

Janneia In reply to ??? [2006-04-07 15:52:40 +0000 UTC]

Waaah~~! This is so good! xD

I just ink (also backgrounds) and scan and add some touching up of tones via Photoshop.

How do you do the backgrounds? i.e. Get them like you do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enchantma In reply to Janneia [2006-04-07 16:10:56 +0000 UTC]

I usually don't do backgrounds...that's a big weakness of mine T__T In my redrawn pages (the ones I did for the printed version) I worked very hard on them. Lately, in my recently posted pages, I've been trying, but I don't recall any specific backgrounds I sometimes draw them and sometimes import existing background tones. Haha, I think I totally didn't answer your question XD; It's cuz I'm not so sure which backgrounds you're refering to. But if I answered you, yay!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Janneia In reply to enchantma [2006-04-07 16:27:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you answered it, partially at least. Or even completely; depends which angle.

I actually meant the ones featured in your tutorials.

It's cool. Just wondering if there was a special technique (or something) required to get the backgrounds, but mentioning "import existing background tones" cut it. I was just curious.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enchantma In reply to Janneia [2006-04-07 16:36:41 +0000 UTC]

in the tutorial? *runs to check* ah! those are just tones comicworks comes with. I thought you meant backgrounds as in settings, not effects XD; my bad.
There are websites which have background tones you can just copy and paste and use as a background--that's the simpler version of my fancy 'import existing background tones'. Photographs of settings also make good backgrounds. I know some manga artists who are into that. It saves you the trouble of having to draw it, and you can show off a second talent; photography haha!

Janneia In reply to enchantma [2006-04-08 07:34:34 +0000 UTC]

Oopsies.

I just kinda group them into one category, as opposed to you differentiating the two. My mistake. x_O

...I need a digital camera, lol.

Thanks for the help!

doctorchef In reply to ??? [2006-03-24 11:16:36 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure this is super-late, but if I can make a suggestion:

When scanning your art, you can get clean b&w if you scan first at Black and White(600 res) and then right before resizing the image do Image>Mode>Greyscale to smooth the lines out. This'll keep your lines from pixellating when you resize it as well as keep out all the pencils, shadows, and other junk that the scanner would have picked up from Greyscale.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enchantma In reply to doctorchef [2006-03-24 17:51:02 +0000 UTC]

Someone mentioned this comment earlier on here. The problem with scanning in black and white first, is that the program this tutorial is based on doesn't pick up black and white images well. It works better if there's "junk" already in the pic, and it does all the cleaning for you. If there's nothing to clean, it kinda morphs the lineart. That's why I suggest people just scan in greyscale, and then let Comicworks do the rest.
But thank you! You are right!

Wow! I really want to become a manga-ka [though I am in my first stage of ameteaurism, but nevertheless...] and this really helps! Most fo the tutorials I look at just say " Draw this, detail it, ink it." Nothing about panels or special paper or different inking tools! It frustrates me so. I love your characters!
