I imagine that utilizing sand dunes in that sort of...activity...would be...um. Interesting, what with -- y'know, never mind.
I've now a second reason to return to them, though!

Although -- engaging in that sort of...fun with no one else would be both physically impossible and worth videotaping.

Because I've a particular reshoot in mind that I think will be superior to this shot.
Which, admittedly, is a stupid reason, at least for the time being.

Thanks! It took a lot of selective channel-mixing.

what lens did you use for this shot?? i know you were at 10mm so i know it was an ultra wide just wanted to know which one specifically...nice shot by the way.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens. Some say that its Sigma-produced competition (10-20mm) is comparable, but I've had so much luck with the incredible sharpness of this lens at most apertures that I wouldn't trade it for anything (and it hardly ever leaves my camera body, now).

Powerful cuves buddy, you've done a great piece.
That's a very nice photo, it's tones, shadows and sharpening are impressive.

WOW is this gorgeous. What super composition, the B&W REALLY makes this shot Derek. I love the light and the shadowing, the ripples of the sand. GREAT work

Wonderful place to visit, more so. Felt like a kid, dashing stupidly from the crest of one dune to the next to the next and only rarely tripping in the process.

Yeah -- I was surprised to see that it lacked distortion. I'm so used to wide-angle shots being irreparable in that sense.
Thanks!

I loved standing between dunes, thereby unable to see up and above and beyond their caps into the relative desolation that surrounded them. I could imagine their stretching without bound into a boundless ocean that for whatever reason had become frozen and slowly dried.
Thanks for your narrative and immersion.

And where such dunes can be found?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
eurai In reply to Illia-Ermine [2006-05-16 07:57:22 +0000 UTC]
They're not very common, at least in the United States; I know of only a two sets of dunes in California (which is one of our most desert-inclusive states). Both are located in Death Valley National Park -- which, consequently, is home to all sorts of surreal destinations: a massive crater once home to an active volcano, a miles-wide dry lake home to rocks that dance about during bouts of extreme wind, salt flats that crystallize and reform annually, natural springs that house lifeforms that remain unchanged despite their million years-old age...all sorts of unique canvases upon which nature has painted that mankind can only (thankfully) admire and never change. I'd love to return there; I saw so little compared to what was available.

Yeh, that sounds great... Just have never seen dunes myself
I'm not a traveller and even if I'm going something I always prefer just to look at this, without wasting my tume and energy on capturing it... I'm lazy, I know.
This April I went to one interesting place - city of Elista - it's a capital of Kalmykiya - republic within Russian Federation, and it's situated on the south, so there's much difference to what I am used to, and there were a lot of objects to shot such as a lot of Buddist temples there.
But I considered myself to be too buzy and tired so I didn't bring a cam there. Hope my new-made friend, who wasn't so lazy will send me few photos

Ooooh -- I've heard of Elista! One of the many Eurasian cities I'd love to someday visit. Travel has become so difficult now that I've silly "adult" responsibilities. I love photography primarily because it forces me to explore my surroundings both near and impossibly far.
You say that you don't often travel. Where have you been, though, that you'd recommend to one stuffed into the corner of another continent? I'd love to hear more of lands I've not before seen or otherwise experienced.

Well, travelling there is... Agh, at least it was funny, 'cause only one van from the whole train goes there from Stavropol'. So this van was full of noisy students, speaking english - there we were going all-russian competetins in english >_<. But it was a wonderful sight with heights of birds' flight

eurai In reply to ArtFreakThea [2006-05-16 01:29:07 +0000 UTC]
That's what I'd thought, too -- but found that, once I was running from the top of one dune to the next, it was difficult to remember that I was there for photography-oriented purposes. A lot of kids were around, too, doing the same things: having contests in seeing who could slide down the face of a dune the fastest, who could roll down a dune and pick up the most sand in the process, etc.
Anyway -- thanks!
