“Perhaps not,” Ordiel responds. “But had the matter of her quickening gone otherwise, so that my… intrusion…had not so unexpectedly disrupted her intended course, do you honestly think she woudn’t have gladly donned a similar tether? Perhaps one less visible, but more social, and something far more stringent than this length of enchanted weave?” Ordiel nods in self-confirmation.
“Let us not forget,” the man continues, tugging lightly on the leash, “that it was I who was left to carry the weight of shame for Avora’s ruination. You and yours were hurt, undoubtedly, but shamed? I was condemned for sabotage and, worse, ambition, by your Lord Uncle, stripped of almost all lordly rank by the High Lady Maladyne at the Master Sorcerer’s suggestion. And, further, with the leadership of this city handed down and aside from Lord Vandermoor to the High Lady Drea, let us not forget that it was I who found Avora Villios years later and allowed Luther to contact her once again. Perhaps the Lady Avar of Port Sessen may have assented to rejoining our society in Dernhem, free of whatever leash she may have perceived to break upon her flight ten years ago—but, broken or not, service to Dernhem is a yoke I have never shied away from.”

His eyes lock onto the Scholar's. "But I do not think you'd find your elder sister as averse to it as you claim."
