Okay, I'm going back now to continue Maladyne's story arc in Web of Betrayal.

Okay, I'm fast-forwarding a bit here, showing six of the eight completed images in the first part of the next sequence. Why? Well, the issues that are to be shared in this sequence are, as DA puts it, ideologically sensitive. In the magical, venom-fueled hallucination, Maladyne encounters important members of her family and confronts them about their great devotion to the Harbinger and plan to lead all of Dernhem into Her embrace. The first individual Maladyne converses with is her grandfather (I think, I might change that), Master Tymon, the man who banished Dreamstalker "worship" from Dernhem, an accomplishment that was commemorated in the statue we've already seen here:
I've written up a draft of the words that are exchanged, and,...well, they're a little personal--too close to home, I guess, in the sentiments expressed between a "child" who is questioning their elder's worldview and the elder who sacrificed a great deal to build that worldview. The phrase "Write what you know" is somewhat insightful here, in that I have some experience with the prospect Maladyne and Tymon are facing, although "Write what you want to understand" is a far more influential notion in Demon's Due and this scene in particular.
With that in mind, I don't want to post it, yet. I'll hold off for now with my draft safely tucked away to await publication in the books, and here I'll just suggest a couple of important points from it. (1) It's very difficult for beings like we are to recognize and accept that what we perceived was "good" was actually "not very good" in the lives of other people, some of whom we may deeply care about. (2) When confronted with this idea, it is very easy for beings like we are to simply label/judge those others as "misinformed" or "led astray" or "not ready" for the perception we hold to. (3) This labeling may be done to allow us to justify our perception to ourselves, but it also diminishes the other people in our own minds (they are "mis-informed" and "led astray" as in "not thinking for themselves" like we do and thereby making a mistake, and they're "not ready" because they are still "childish" rather than being "grown up" like we are). (4) Perhaps more disturbingly, this labeling may diminish other people in their own minds as well, so that they think their own insights, experiences, and perceptions don't count for as much as someone else's. (5) Thus, in the name of loving and caring about others, we toss respect for them out of the goddamn window as well as diminish their own self-respect. (6) We can say we don't label others or disrespect them, but if we bend a knee, support, hearken to, and pay money to those who openly do so, then we really can't say that we don't do it ourselves.
Also, one might note visually in the sequence of images above that the drawings and atmosphere are getting rather steadily darker...
Maladyne was drawn using the awesome reference imagery provided by minokura . Thanks!
I hope people are weathering the current situation well, and that those who are suffering can get the help they need. Again, I'd like to encourage everyone to be a bit more understanding and tolerant than ever, and I mean myself as well, in viewpoints and communications.
Enjoy!
Note: Web of Betrayal and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Well, you know how they say certain topics are off-limits at Thanksgiving dinner, I guess it's extra-true when communing with the ancestors! Grandpa Tymon looks like he's going off about how "them illegal dustmaidens dun took all our jobs!", and all the other ghosts are rolling their eyes like "there he goes again. Get Grandpa Tymon drinking, and there's no stopping him..."
Also, Mal is giving off a real Catriona Balfe vibe here, which is kinda kewl!
