Description This stereogram was created manually in GIMP using no special software, plugins, or filters. I'm not trying to win an art contest with this, it's just to show off my results of doing it manually.

Once I get the technique down, I'll prepare a tutorial (and probably put this deviation in scraps at that time). It's actually quite simple to do manually, but it's repetitive. The technique isn't perfect, as stereogram software has algorithms to reduce "ghosting" or "artifacts" which sometimes appear in the hidden image, making them look odd. However, it is neat to see how they are put together.

U have to unfocused your eyes, like when your reading a book and space out and it looks like the words multiply. Its kind of hard to explain, but you will know it when you see it.

I'd like the tut, as well! I think these are amazing, and I can't figure out how you did it without rendering software... Amazing!

Displacement map in several iterations?

Looks pretty good except for the ghosts you already mentioned.

It was done with displacement maps! I have a very curious nature and love figuring out how this stuff works. Maybe one day I'll actually understand how the math works. But, until that time, it's been fun working through it manually.

The ghosts are definitely there and I may never get rid of them by doing the steps manually, but like I said, this has been a fun process.

BTW, I don't participate on the Yahoo Stereogram forum, but I do get the email updates and you guys are putting out some great work!

It's very cool that you figured this out!

The math is fairly simple in fact, and if you are interested here is a great link - [link]

Also displacement map method also doesn't really allow to render from center.

Thanks for the link! I'll check it out. Math isn't my strong suit, but I'll see how it goes.

Actually you can create them from a center strip; I stumbled on the method by accident. The artifacts are still present, but you can do it. Here's one created with that method....[link]

Pretty neat, eh?

I see, very nice! In Photoshop displacement map is going in one direction (as far as I know). Probably mirroring the images after each iteration would do the trick. Still not clear how to eliminate ghosting.

Cool a butterfly. Looks almost perfect. Some of the edges aren't perfect but it's damn good. And you did it manually? Any chance of a filter for this or is it impossible?

I guess I'd like a tutorial if no filter.

Here's some information for you....

I created 3 tutorials starting with the very basics. You can view tutorial 1 here: [link] The others are in my gallery.

Check out 3Dimka, he's a master and he's listed some free software about half way down the page here: [link]

Have fun and if you need any help, feel free to drop me a line!

Cheers!

There are filters that can be used in GIMP or you can purchase separate programs. I'll post some links for you a little later and put you in contact with some of the masters!

Thanks for the feedback!
