Description Reverse Macro

Some people have never even heard about this technique. Others know what it is, but don't know how to do it. I made this tutorial this afternoon in hopes to answer any questions.

Hope it helps!

[edit]
For maximum magnification, use your minimum focal length (i.e. 18mm, if your lens is 18-55mm). Incredible results!
You can also pick up something called a "reversin ring" to make shooting a whole lot easier! Basically a filter that screws onto the end of your lens and allows you to mount it to your camera body [link] Super cheap and it makes things much easier

This is a really great explanation.
Now I wonder about Bonus 2.. I do have some macrotubes, so I can get that focus without reversing it... but will the DoF thing help when adding macrotubes? in that case, in what way would the steps be, hold DoF, remoe lens, add macrotubes, add lens, then release Dof? or another way?

Another question... could I use the macrotubes AND a reverser 18-55 for rediculous insane macro?

Thank you!
It could, though I don't have any experience with tubes so I don't know.
As for the reverse 18-55 + tubes, I don't think that would work very well. I've found that the shorter the focal length, the greater the magnification. Only way to know for sure is to try, though

That is very true, I better give it a try!
Now where did I put those tubes. hrm

I don't know how Canon lenses are working but e.g. Pentax lenses just open the aperture blades when attached to the camera.
So you will have to push that one down to be able to shoot with an acceptable shutter speed..

But a good tutorial any ways ^^
I like that technique and produced some good shots with that.. though I must say that I prefer the bellow ^^

your tutorial is nice, congratulations but I think you should include 2 more points:

1. there are special reverse rings on the market, it's advisable to use them for mounting lens to the body instead of holding them manually, available for any system (an example: [link] hoto&qid=1261991680&sr=1-1 ) -prices are usually low

2. it seems that 'bonus 1 and 2' will not work with all systems... for example in pentax lenses apperture setting is transferred by special pusher, not electronically...
additionally: are you sure, that removing lenses with camera switched on will not cause damage? in manuals manufacturers are writting: 'switch camera off before removing lenses'

Thanks!
1.) When I make a new tutorial, I certainly will. I made this tutorial when I myself didn't have a reversing ring, and it was primarily aimed at those who knew nothing about reverse macro (who therefore probably didn't have one either). I'll include it in the new version now that I have one to show
2.) I should specify that it works with Canon in the next one. I certainly haven't seen any adverse effects, though there may be some in the long run, theoretically. Now that I have a ring, this isn't much of a problem

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hellraidgr In reply to FramedByNature [2009-12-18 12:01:24 +0000 UTC]

mainly the focus, I tried and every little movement I do I lose focus. As well as I don't really get that good focus at all : P

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FramedByNature In reply to Hellraidgr [2009-12-19 02:33:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you have to be steady. When you shoot something on a table, make sure the front of the camera lens is braced on the table as well, pointing down to what you're shooting.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hellraidgr In reply to FramedByNature [2009-12-19 12:21:21 +0000 UTC]

I understand, does the focus have anything to do with me not getting as sharp pictures? or is it just the zoom and where I stand that matters?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FramedByNature In reply to Hellraidgr [2009-12-19 20:26:40 +0000 UTC]

Could just be the lens, I suppose. It should be in focus, just in a very shallow spot.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hellraidgr In reply to FramedByNature [2009-12-19 20:29:43 +0000 UTC]

getting a little hang of it, although it's really really hard. Every little moment and you lose focus and it usually turns out all blurry and grainy

i was really amazed that it actually worked to make a picture with this
but i didnt figure out how to get a focused picture...maybe iΒ΄m to stupid or so, but it all went out blurry.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FramedByNature In reply to CaryM [2009-12-06 04:04:37 +0000 UTC]

You can't use autofocus. You have to move the camera towards the object until it comes into focus. You should only be a few inches away
