Description
Reverse MacroSome people have never even heard about this technique. Others know what it is, but don't know how to do it. I made this tutorial this afternoon in hopes to answer any questions.
Hope it helps!
[edit]
For maximum magnification, use your minimum focal length (i.e. 18mm, if your lens is 18-55mm). Incredible results!
You can also pick up something called a "reversin ring" to make shooting a whole lot easier! Basically a filter that screws onto the end of your lens and allows you to mount it to your camera body [link] Super cheap and it makes things much easier

Hey there
I have a favour to ask of you... I am currently doing my Year 12 HSC (Australian: Higher School Certificate, ie. Last year of high school) Information Processes and Technology major project, Which is to be a website on photography and cameras.
I saw your tutorial and was wondering if I would able to feature it on the site I make. Of course, You will be fully credited with links to your deviantart profile and deviation page.
I will also send you a link at the completion of the project if you would wish to see.
I would really appreciate if you agreed, but if you donβt, no hard feelings
Thanks!

I heard a lot about this.. but i am fear to try it.. i dont know if i going to damage the lens or something?.. that happened?
i have a canon as well but my len macro is a sigma, does make a difference??

FramedByNature In reply to sandranataly [2010-05-07 21:10:21 +0000 UTC]
It shouldn't damage your lens if you're careful. However, if you already have a macro lens, there's really no need to use this technique. It's meant as an alternative for those who can't afford macro lenses

Focal length wise, or too big a filter size?

filter size... 72mm. I can't create a very good seal.

My Nikon won't allow me to take a shot without a lens attached. Is there any way to get around that? :/

I'm not sure, I haven't tried any Nikons. If there's a solution, it'll be on the internet somewheeere

I figured it out after playing with it. With the Nikon D40 you have to make sure the mode is on Manual. The flash will turn to TTL mode, so the only pictures you'll be taking with it are pictures that have nice lighting already, because there's really no way to change that. It's a wonderful concept, but I won't be using it much until I get the adapter...dust in my sensor=not okay, lol. :]

Would you happen to know if you do the same thing for a Nikon D70? I've been trying to mess around with it and got nowhere.

Leader-Productions In reply to Barkley-My-Baby0708 [2010-04-25 05:15:49 +0000 UTC]
I'm not suuuuuure. I can only get mine to work in the "no flash" mode. But then I can only use it in super good light. && outside is not a good place for reverse macro unless you have the connector. I don't like the idea of getting dust in my sensor.
Try turning off the flash. If that doesn't work, then I'm not sure. Sometimes mine won't work like that, either.

I don't have a kit lens, I have an 18-105 lens - does this mean that this technique will not work?
π: 0 β©: 1
FramedByNature In reply to Kai-Tea [2010-03-21 20:15:18 +0000 UTC]
You could still try it, I think it might work. Be sure to test it on a stationary object (like a coin) and try both long and short focal lengths
π: 0 β©: 1
Kai-Tea In reply to FramedByNature [2010-03-22 02:12:31 +0000 UTC]
The lens itself is just wider than the kit lens so I was unsure as to whether I could successfully block the light.

So you have to hold the lens still while shooting?
π: 0 β©: 1
FramedByNature In reply to ChocoCooki [2010-03-13 16:34:31 +0000 UTC]
Yes, though you can buy a reversing ring. If you get one of those, you just screw the ring onto the front of your lens and it mounts backwards like a normal lens

Well that answered a bunch of questions, except one. Lighting. I find that I don't have enough. I use a reverse lens attachment for my shots. I will try the 18mm setting and preset for the DOF but how do I fix the lighting issue??
Excellent tut btw!

FramedByNature In reply to Oden36 [2010-02-14 04:34:08 +0000 UTC]
Well, that depends what you're shooting. If you're outside, you should have adequate lighting given the time of day (I usually shoot outside). If you're shooting inside, I'm not sure how you'd improve it other than getting a brighter light
