Also according to Lost Hedgehog Tales by writer Ian Flynn, Antoine was originally going to die die. But it was scrapped due to fan reaction to Sally's roboticization and Antoine's sacrifice.

But then again, look at her face in the 4 last panels. She understands the situation, even being a little girl, all the thoughts and all the problems that this doll has caused, she gets them at this very moment.
Plus it’s clear that all of this is racing like crazy in her head, her innocent consciousness is being shaken up by those realizations, all because she just wanted to be good and give back that doll in one piece to its owner.
It’s the kind of realization that can traumatize you for a long time, even more when you’re a kid, especially one like Cream !
