You knew it was coming, right? A brand new satire tutorial covering copying vs. referencing -- now in video game format! Yay!

Again, not based on any specific person. I guess if someone did think it was based off them, they'd have to admit they were art-thieving copiers using the guise of referencing, and odds are it really isn't based on them but their guilty conscience thinks it is. Or something like that, whatever.

Let's see how good you are at one-crediting this, my little devil. Hwehwehwe.....

I usually don't like satire but this is just the best. It ridicules a subject but it isn't offensive; seeing that it doesn't specifically hurt someone.

Okay, obvious copying of another's work as your own is in very poor taste, and if you actually claim it to be your original work when it isn't or make money off of it then that is indeed copyright infringement and illegal. But all artists begin their craft by copying other artistsβ€”it's how you get better, it's how you develop your own unique individual style, so to attack others for doing precisely that, especially when they don't try and sell the pictures or claim ownership of them, is utterly ridiculous.

Just a question. Do you count using an image to get the basic anatomy of what you're trying to draw, and still keeping the pose the same as the photo, but translating it into your own style as copying or referencing? I do that a lot, and I try hard not to copy the original artist's image, and just use it as pose reference, and I haven't thought of it as copying, but...Maybe it is?

BlackJessy In reply to AnguineAffinity [2014-09-12 09:41:56 +0000 UTC]

I think the same way you do... I mean, if you want to draw a specific pose, but you don't know how, you pick a picture from the internet and use it as pose reference. I don't see a problem there... how am I supposed to learn things?

I will admit Im guilty of eyeballing one of my fav pieces of art bc the pose was exectly what I needed to portray a feeling I was trying to get across and is turned out to be way to close to the original. lol Of course I gave the link for the original and all that jazz. Β I always give credit to the original artist bc they are amazing and deserve it. ^_^

I'll do if for you. The links to the copied and original are all I need. I'm actually quite serious. I use a separate account to be a dA cop. And this sort of thing bothers me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GwenMayhem In reply to Miyori999 [2012-12-15 22:59:33 +0000 UTC]

Lol, aww thanks, but I think for the most part it's been remedied. It bothers me too - tracing/copying on dA, but this person can been doing it for a while and nothing seemed to help except being a friend to them and encouraging them when they draw without copying. I'm not saying that's gonna work for everyone, but it seemed to have work for now *knock on wood*

And I see you are a fellow Seattlite. Represent lol.

Miyori999 In reply to GwenMayhem [2012-12-16 00:22:42 +0000 UTC]

Seattlite, proud of it. In all honesty, as a child I learned to draw from tracing rather than those how-to books. But, after so many times of tracing cartoon and anime characters I learned to draw them on my own. Granted, I'm not as good as you or the one who did this parody, but all my submissions are my original drawings.

Also, Yesh . Lived in the area my entire life.

Hope everything works out fine from now on.

Aww, you're sweet. Art is in the eye of the behold though...And I learned from referencing Naoko Takeuchi's works, but I've since come into my own style and branched out. It's a good stepping stone to learn, but it's important to always credit if you do reference. By the way, I like your drawings <3

Sadly, I moved away earlier this year, but I wish I could move back, I miss it. I'm in Eastern WA now, it's...alright....haha

I like your primer, it's a great explanation of the difference. You would think, with copyright being such a hot-button topic, that art studies would include a little legalities and art philosophy. I know a lot of well-meaning but inexperienced artists will often "eyeball" photo refs for commissions, not understanding the difference between this and using models, stock images, stencils, french curves, and the like. I gotta admit, I'm not shy when it comes to legalities, and even I have difficulty defining the difference. As I understand it, the law isn't even properly defined in this area, is it? In fact, legally wouldn't what you describe here be defined as a derisive work? Personally, I just stay away from any gray area and if I use an image for pose, I don't sell that work. But a lot of my friends have taken to getting booths at the local cons and selling "fan art." I always tell them to make sure they have whatever laws they need to understand with them so they can display it whenever someone starts talking about copyright law. A lesson I learned from my uncle who made jewelry, some made from coins of various realms, including some USA coinage. He got tired of defending himself to people who said it was the same as defacing the American flag, and posted a plaque with the law which defended his craft written on it.

I love this and the sarcasm is obvious which is a plus.

I was trying to find a good example because I've had this problem a few years ago(which of course they lied saying they did not copy). I want to be able to throw something(words, explanations, etc.) in a thieve's face if it ever happens to me again.

I mean, because of copyright infringement I did not use this site or any other site to show my art. I kept them in secret which made me sad and less active :c
