Description
Finished the Bane! Here's a comparison to the artwork that I was using. I forgot to add the rear sight, and I didn't have time to mod the stock to look more like the Borderlands stock. Next time!Check out the 1080p video of it with the LIGHTS AND SOUNDS! [link]

Man, I've had like 5 of them. I love em. Did you watch the video in the link? My bane makes noises!

The gun that everyone loves to hate, but since you made this tangible I can't do anything but simply love it!

I see a nerf recon stock. I made a prop with one as well. : )

It certainly is! I'm thinking Nerf Centurion + sound chip = Morningstar next. :3

Sad it doesn't shot darts, but it's a very awesome mod by the way !

Yeah... There's no room in the shell for darts. I might be able do to something similar with a Stampede or Stryfe or Magstrike, but it probably wouldn't have the amp since it's big and needs more power.

Thanks! Apart from the tesla rod, it's really similar to the work I did on Brimstone, but in like two weeks (not including the months I spent sourcing parts)! I'm getting better at this!

You should! The audio chip isn't cheap, and You'll have do to a LOT of soldering though.

It just takes some practice. And a shop. And tools. And money for materials.

hahahah fun! I made one Bane, so now I want to do other guns, like the Bandit Assault rifle, like Madhouse. Or the Bandit SMG, or a Maliwan RPG, or a Tediore SMG done in layers of PVC, or just a pair of Nerf Stampedes painted in Vladof and DAHL colors for a Goliath costume.

I agree! Although making a new, more accurate stock wouldn't be difficult, and it would be easy to swap out. Or.... multiple Borderlands 2 SMG stocks... :3

It was a lot of fun in person, everyone who saw it was amazed. Unfortunately, it was pretty loud at the con, and I don't know that I will do more props with sounds since they're hard to hear.

Did you throw an amplifier in there? I have always had troubles when I was building laserguns getting them loud enough, put a dual 3 amp amplifier on it, quite loud (just hard on the batteries)!

Hypercats In reply to AetherAnvil [2013-05-23 15:44:00 +0000 UTC]
Yep! That's what the separate battery pack is for, unfortunately. :/ I'm not a fan of external power supplies, and the last gun with lights and sounds that I made (Brimstone) had 12v worth of AA batteries in the gun itself. I had a weird current drop with this one, trying to wire up the 4.5v circuit for the audio chip and the 7.5v amp to the same battery pack. So I ended up running the audio chip off of one 4.5v internal battery pack, the leds off of an internal 3v battery pack, and the amp off of an external C cell 7.5v battery pack.
I prefer 12v amps, and I thought I was getting one, but it ended up being 7.5 so I had to work with what I had. Most "pc speaker" amp/speaker combos I've found used to be 12v, but now they're getting into other strange voltage levels. I looked at a 10.5v before getting the one I ended up looking at. Best thing to do is to go to Goodwill and look at the PC speakers. I grabbed a GREAT old ass Gateway powered speaker (just one, with the cord cut) for a buck at a St Vinnies. Unfortunately, the speaker and the amp board were HUGE and wouldn't fit nicely in Bane.

Damn that is frustrating. Electronics can be such a pain, specially when you mess up and just cook the part...
I usually grab: [link]
I find that many of the microcontroller amps to have a very small foot print (though the selection there is a bit paltry, surf around). Have gotten really good results with these (I really should get around to finishing and posting a full metal cyberpunk gun a made ages ago, micro-controlled so the lights pulsed, but went high when trigger pulled, etc. Can't recommend getting into Arduino or other microcontroller programming, amazing what can be done!).
I also hate separate battery packs, but I think yours was quite clever, fit perfectly with the theme! Need to look around for some full metal wire shielding

Hypercats In reply to AetherAnvil [2013-05-23 16:56:51 +0000 UTC]
Cool, yeah I looked at that amp/speaker kit, but I can't find my SPL meter and I wasn't sure that a .5w 8ohm would be loud enough. I would prefer using something like this: [link] where it's 2.5w RMS, 5 max, with hopefully a 12v amp. Cut em and gut em, and you get louder sound output for half the price.
Plus, the chip I used already has an amp for powering an 8ohm, .5w speaker, so I don't know that feeding the audio into another .5w amp would do much other than give you clipping issues.
I didn't bother with any wire shielding because the audio sampling rate for the wav files on the chips was so low, that it didn't really matter.

For that price, with built in amplification, yeah, that is a much more sane route. I think perhaps that is the route I should follow too (my electronics just got too costly, one reason why I lost focus on it). Thanks for sharing!

Hypercats In reply to AetherAnvil [2013-05-23 17:26:55 +0000 UTC]
No problem! I would definitely go a different route if time and money weren't a concern. but if I'm going to take more commissions on props with lights and sounds, it's more cost effective to find pre-made circuits than do to the soldering myself. That, and you can pick up a pair of PC speakers like this at pretty much any thrift shop for a few bucks. I already found the chinese supplier of the audio chip and a programming/testing board, so it's not unreasonable to think that I could be making more guns like this in the future.
