Description I am practicing doing some speed art. This was anold tiny sketch that I can scanned into photoshop. I then enlarged it and did the line work and coloring in 30 minutes. This is really fast for me.

I never colored glaurung before, but since it is the father of the dragons I decided to go with a classic dragon color scheme. I don't know if J.R.R. ever described its color or not.

In the book, Glaurung was a gold color... I think.

Yes, he is described as golden, through rarely depicted that way in art for some reason.  Of course Smaug was described as red-gold (and referred to as "golden" as well) and is rarely depicted that way as well.

Gotta say, this version resembles a scaled-up, stretched-out extrapolation of one of those nasty land-crocs from King Kong '05...and that's not really a bad look for a land-borne dragon. The brutal, blockish skull is properly fearsome; the short, thick neck is a nice change of pace from the majority of dragonkind; and those abdominal scutes are a nifty detail.

Thank you for the comment. Over the past 15+ years I've grown to like my dragons with shorter (thought still long compared to most animals) necks. They seem to be less of a liability to me. I don't remember the land crocs or are you refering to the V-rexes?

I pretty sure it had legs. I don't recall an exact description describing them, but i know the dwarves we able to wound it by getting to its softer belly armor. That suggest they could get under it, which would be difficult if it didn't have legs. The artist may have been confused by the term worm or wyrm. This would seem to imply a dragon without legs, but that is not what it means. Worm (wyrm) is simple another word for dragon. Tolkien refered to Smaug as a long-worm(wyrm) and it specifically had legs.

Awesome! Wow, this is an increadible Glaurung! All the little spikes and scutes, and the low slung posture, combined with the ferocious looking face and dark gold color-it's just awesome. I love it.

Thanks, I was hoping you would like it. I mean when I think of Tolkien's dragon how can i not think of Scatha-the-Worm! The pic came out a little darker when I posted it compared to how it looked on my screen, but I still like it. Thanks again.
