Description
Here is the red dragon. Unfortunately the scan didn't pick up all of the detail in the various membranes and the scales on the skull, but it came out o.k. This one took a while because I had a hard time with the scales - I did the legs several times. This one is pretty much the D4e standard. The only thing I changed (like most of the dragons) is the proportions some. This tail is longer, but otherwise nothing new here.
I'll post Tiamat by Monday, and then I will start the coloring and reference sheet process.

Very nice! Again I love the scale work. The details in the face are awesome.
I don't think I've said before, but I love the way you connect the wings to the shoulders. The muscles and positioning look fairly natural.

Thank you.
Well, I am basically copying the Lockwood design. One reason I like his design is that the wing attachment/muscles look somewhat reasonable. I did have to figure out the scales though!

And figure 'em out you certainly did-those interlocking osteoderms lend these beasts an exceptional sense of texture. Scatha's note regarding wing-attachment is equally spot-on, and those two primary wing-fingers are interesting. Neck/chest/limb definition is solid, and I do dig those concentric horns & 'mohawk' frill (come to think of it, the Green design from my edition of the Draconomicon sported a slightly shallower version of the latter).
If I may confess a personal bias, I find the Red designs' muzzles somewhat...err...conventional, which of course fits their medieval/Tolkien-esque nature as defined by the game. However, in this case said mug is still exquisitely rendered, and once again the somewhat compact teeth (again, a game-defined feature) are all that even slightly bother me.
On the subject of torso/waist adjustments, while the hind & forelegs could be shifted a skosh closer to one another, I appreciate the gradual taper from front to rear-this one reminds me of those nifty ground-roving crocodilians that popped up from time to time in the Mesozoic fossil record. Feet & talons alike could stand a slight upsizing, but again that may be just me.

Thanks it took some time to get the scales all worked out.
Yep, the red is supposed to be the protypical fire breathing dragon. I changed the muzzle slightly on red dragon head of tiamat to something I like a little more (but still pretty conventional). I do imagine that the red has lips, so you aren't seeing the whole tooth when it pokes through.
I think some of those land-crocs show up in the cenozoic as well.
Ya, I agree that the feet (mostly the hind) and talons could be bigger. I actually made the hind leg quite a bit bigger than the drawing I was using for reference, but I didn't scale up the feet as much as needed.

Lips make sense, and I could stand to look a bit closer at some aspects before making snap judgments. And you're quite right about those land-crocs...interesting recurrence of a somewhat specific niche.

I don't remember the exact time period, but they probably filled roles left open by the dinos until large birds (dinos)and mammals took over.

That looks great. I think the crest makes it look regal.

Thanks. Ya, the D3/D4 designs really went with the regal and arrogant look with the reds. Personally they are my favorite of the D3+ designs.

Amost looks like the silver dragon from 2e. But nice work.

Thanks.
I don't remember the silver from 2e, but the red and silver from 3e (4e metallics have not been officially released yet) are very similar. The silver just isn't as rough and jagged β it is more βrefinedβ It may have a longer neck as well.

I still have the monster manual from 2e, so I do have the image. Love to see the newer version of the metallics as well especially the silvers.

I downloaded the 2e "Monstrous Manual" in pdf format the other day. So I'll check it out when I get home. I found two 3e images if you haven't seen (or don't remember) them.

The 4e designs will come out with the D4e "Draconomicon: Metalic Dragons" later this year ("Draconomicon: Chromatic Dragons" is already out). I don't expect big changes to the silver, but I know they are getting rid of some of the others and added some new ones.

Thanks, I hadn't - that was posted before I joined DA. Very nice, but I must say that he/she seems a little sinister for a silver. But maybe it is just pissed off!
Hey, have you ever seen a good image of D3e design for the platinum dragon - Bahamut? Everything I have seen is pretty terrible. I have sketched a gold and I would like to do Bahamut as well. I will probably just make it up.

Only one from Jeff Easley. In the Deities and Demigods manual. And then there's the version created for the Dragonlance campaign manual. Both not that great. Which is why I created my own design.

Oops! I just searched DA and found your design - and I had already faved it! Well yours is better than any official design I have seen. Damn, I really like the idea of multiple wings - I wish i had thought of that. Oh well, I'll have to do with single pair.

Thanx. I tend do my own thing if I don't like a particular design. Multiple wings was from the design of Bahamut Zero from FF7.

I'm not really familar with any of the FF versions of Bahamut (or Tiamat for that matter), but I believe certain types of angels are supposed to have 6 wings - so it made sense in that respect as well.

I don't remember the dragonlance version, but there is this D3 minature version: [link] , also not very good. I think I will have to do my own. I believe a mixture of the gold and silver might look good.
Have you posted your design?
