Description Here is my take on the D&D, D4e black dragon. To be honest I didn't intend to get so detail with these sketches, but I just wasn't able to figure out how to stop!?

This is more of mixtue of the D1 and D4 designs than most of what I will be posting. The D1 black was my favorite back in the day and I had to bring back some of the missing features, isuch as: the plate scales on the neck and tail (the tail is hinted at in some D4 pictures) and to a lesser extent on the arms and legs. I also changed the nose to be more like the D1 design with the banded scales across the bridge.

I also broading the tail to give it a keel like look ( I hope it appears that way at least) - that was my own tweak. As blacks spend a lot of time in the water I thought a better swimming tail as a good feature to have.

You are free to use any of my stuff if you give credit, but I've barelt poseted anything in a year. I just don't have the time to do artwork currently. I work full time, coach soccer year round, and run a D&D campaign for my sons and there friends. So I just don't have much extra time. I am sorry, but I can't commit to anything at the momment.

Offhand, I'm struck by the sheer inconvenience those ram-horns would pose for this species in close combat against foes of similar size. Their placement seems likely to impair a Black's efforts to chomp necks/limbs, although (a) perhaps they could hook/gouge targets buffalo-style and (b) I'm aware melee attacks by no means form the core of a D&D-verse dragon's repertoire.

Otherwise, the skull is delightfully rugged (love those sunken eyes); those crocodilian scales armoring the neck/spine/abdomen/tail look the part; that keratinous tail-tip is interesting; and I'm impressed by that muscular, humpbacked torso.

I basically agree about the horns. I like the look of the new horn design, but they do seem rather unpractical. Thank you for your thoughts.

I really like how you did the plate on his chest , they all seem to fit together perfectly . I'm currently trying to do something a bit similar for a "reptilicus" drawing and that's not that easy to give volume to the beast .

It is hard and time consuming. However, i am getting a lot of practice with this series and I am really starting to get the hang of it. It really helps to start with some very light guide lines that can be erased or drawn over with the actual scales after you get everything lined up correctly.

Very nice! I like that his head isn't so skull-like, but still looks imposing. The long, flat tail does make sense for a swimming creature, so that's a good detail.

Speaking of detail, wow. The details on this guy are just fantastic, even if you didn't mean to make them. I love the claws in particular-the sort of "spike" like protrusion on the tops of them makes them really look sharp and deadly.

I was wondering if you would use the smooth, straight forward horns or the newer, sweaping ones. Either would look great, but I favor the sweap.

Thanks, I don't like the skull like look of the current design either

I thought that claw detail was fun too, I'm glad you noticed.

I'm using the newer sweeping ones, like in this drawing.

GREGOLE [2009-01-14 19:26:32 +0000 UTC]

Not a bad take on the critter. The forward-facing horns and dorsal sail are the main traits for that species, and both are present - though I think the sail could be longer and lower. Right now it looks too regal, and similar to the green dragon's.

Thanks, I still prefer the smooth upward pointing horns of the original.

I'm not sure what you mean by longer, but I know I remembered the sail going the full length of the beast and that was how I drew it at first. Then I download the original Monster Manual and what do you know - the sail was only on the neck! I went back and changed my drawing. I must have always drawn it with a full sail as a kid because it sure as hell is ingrained in my memory that way!
