Another speed sketch. Smaug this time. This was an attempt to draw Smaug how Tolkien described and sketch it. The red-gold long worm that it was.I wasn't going to post if with the fire, but I accidentally made some of the fire on the line work layer - oh well. I also toyed with the idea of adding a background. But it was taking to long and that is the opposite of what I want to accomplish in my speed sketches

And how did I miss this piece of awesome?! I swear, my DevWatch is messed up...anyway, this is, as I said, awesome. The pose is nice and serpentine, and I like the dark red color. The huge wings are wonderful-they actually look like they would work. The face and the fire are terrific, as well. Very, very nice Smaug design!

Thanks, I think if I concentrate on doing more sketches i may actually improve! The more you practice the better type of thing, I just wish I had time to do more.

Niiice...love Smaug's dynamic, winding pose, those proportionately impressive wings, and the 'blur' effect you used to render that blast o' hades. Fine work on the inward-sweeping horns and evil eye as well. Overall, a sleek, solid rendition.

Thanks. I hadn't drawn smaug in years, but when I found the old sketch of glaurung there was one of Smaug as well. The Smaug sketch was horrible, so I decided to do a new one. I'm glad you like it.

I still like the "cat-dragon" though. That version of Smaug started my love affair with dragons.
I think the Hobbit is a much better read than the trilogy - good chice for hte class.
