I kinda sketched up my own mothra, inspired by this design.

Indeed I will, I may even color it.

This seems like one of those wrinkles that may be best resolved by pulling back and working on something else for a while. Good luck with that, and I'll most likely have SOMETHING put together regarding Orga in a day or two.

agreed, and I look forward to your Orga comments. Most people seem to think it is to much of a departure from the original. But I'm trying to make something that is a combination of the Millenium and Orga, because in my kaijuverse Orga never mutated from godzilla's DNA. Anyway, let me know what you think.

I can understand your disinclination to reuse the sting, nifty as that machine-gun effect was...and what a replacement. Color me intrigued.
Would these scales do anything aside from puncturing targets? I have a fairly odd idea for that: if a stricken monster attempts to use its energy weapon(s), the embedded scales absorb that power and either superheat (disintegrating in the process) or detonate, stipling the poor bugger with cauterized wounds either way.
Sadly, I don't have much additional advice regarding the leg quandary. Perhaps the upper two sections could each be encased in a fuzz-coated exoskeletal sheath, doubling their apparent thickness & providing a bit of reinforcement?

Well like I said, i like the idea - I just want to go a different direction
I had only thought of them as defense (traditional method), as blades (attached to antennae) and as darts (thrown from antennae). However, i really like the idea that they would somehow disrupt an enemies energy attack (absorb, deflect, explode - something). That combines the traditional approach with my concept in an exciting way that would be sure to aggrevate attacking kaiju.
I'm not sure what to do about the legs either.

Having spent a couple days mulling this over, I'm actually rather taken with this Mothra design's numerous departures from convention. The streamlined head/thorax connection adds a smidgen of aerodynamic grace; the elongated antennae are visually striking (and could provide a wide field of fire if they serve as beam-generators); and the new legs, if nothing else, lend this Moth actual mobility on the ground. Finally, that BW wing-sketch to the right looks spot-on to me.
Recommendation-wise, I have but a pair of ideas: (a) a GMK-style stinger tipping the abdomen, and (b) fractionally thickening Mothra's upper legs where they join the body, above that first bend. Perhaps the sting could conduct/discharge electricity, endowing the Moth with a handy last-ditch weapon for entering/escaping melee. As for beefing up the leg-bases, I simply figure that might spare Mothra from losing an appendage or two as we saw in the '04 flick.

thanks for the reply adn I'm glad you like my approach. I am actually planning on using the antennae as a modified scale attack. Along with the typical scale attack (which is really more defensive), Mothra can throw its edged scales like deadly shurikens by whipping its antennae - what do you think?
I don't think I am going to do a stinger, too wasp like. That is a reason I want to add the antennae blades. Though I did like the addition of it in GMK. I really made Mothra a more convincing fighter. I need to think about the legs. I like the long skinny look, but your not the only person to comment on their apparent frality.

I like it! She actually has useful legs now. She looks much closer to an actual moth, now, as well, though like Ren said, a little more "fluff" might help.

I like - definitely truer to the source material for her. I'd suggest giving her just a little more muscle - Mothra is supposed to be graceful and beautiful and yatta yatta, but she needs to have at least a little battle capability built into her as well.

thanks, I added the long legs so it could battle hand to hand more, but I fear that if Imake them to beefy they would look to odd. I take a look and see

Wow, this certianly is a departure from what I'm used to seeing. Its a good thing. Though, is it possible you could make her...fluffier? Also keep in mind that her wings are often used as weapons so they'd be sturdier and at least twice as big as the body.

I'm not sure about fluffier, but I'll see. I'm having a hard time with the wings. When i get something more definative 'l post it and get your thoughts

Moths are fluffier by nature so good areas would probably be the back, head and chest. If she's too 'naked' she'll be more like a butterfly instead. The wings can come in a variety of forms so take your time while picking a style.

Yes moths in general are fluffier, but in my brief internet research I did find quite a range of fluffyness for moths. Some are crazy fluffy, some not so much. However, this is something a few people have suggested, so I will definintely look into it.

RenDragonClaw In reply to hypergojira [2008-09-08 16:18:05 +0000 UTC]
I generally consider Mothra to be moderately fluffy for a couple reasons. Mothra is this gentle but firm source of good in the Godzillaverse and the fluff kinda helps that impression. If you compare most versions with the very vespid looking one in GMK, you get slightly different vibes because it has very little fluff. Less fluff generally makes her look more alien and menacing. Since she's a Millenian and all, a more aggressive look might work out but it would certainly give her a different impression. It really depends on what kind of character you want for her.

Fluff. Well my problem with the "fluff" is getting the right amount. To much (and I think most toho mothras have to much) and it looks like a stuffed animal. To little and it looks more like a wasp. i'm trying to find the correct balance (for me), but i tend to the less fluffy look.
My mothra is still a defender of earth, the reason is just different, so it is not really aggressive - but I still want it to be more hardcore than the typical Toho version. Also, the earth mothra is just and Avatar of the actual Millenian mothra - show it could come in many shapes, sizes and fluffiness! I'm not sure yet if my drawing is of the avatar or the chosen form of the actual Mothra.
