Description
After making my first set of Fimo teeth for a possible Viral costume I may make in the future I thought I would put together a tutorial for anyone else looking to try their hand at it.*EDIT*
commented below with a tip that may come in handy if the color ends up unnaturally white.
"i have a little tip for anyone reading this, to give your teeth that realistic look ad a tiny (AND I MEAN TINY) amount of tan clay, yellow, and an even smaller amount of black, it looks really good, i have tried something similair to this where i made single teeth and matched them to my teeth shade..."

You're not going to get an argument from me, that is actually a really good observation, the porous aspect of the clay. I'm considering rewriting my artist details to include things like that and the other information I've given so its definitely something I will point out, expect a point out for it. <3

Thank you! Yeah, I did a bit of research on polymer clay because I had wanted to fashion wearable goblin teeth. Happy sculpting!

From my understanding all forms are sold overseas as children toys. Theres a couple articles on the company's site concerning its "new" formula (from 2-3 years ago).

Its not exactly going to kill you if you put it in your mouth... just don't eat it, and brush your teeth afterwords. White clay would "work" (any colour would) but in my opinion I think it would look fake and unnatural so the transparent works best, as it has a bit of a 'depth' to it...(kinda sorta)
Hope that makes sense. Im only 14 ^^

To be honest, I wouldn't mainly because when you're making them the clay would end up pressed into the braces and be caught on it. What you could possibly do is go the conventional route of making fangs but making "caps" for the tips only but I'm not sure if this would be a great idea either.

i've also heard of people with braces asking for extra of the wax they give you for when your braces hurt, and using it to make some makeshift teeth caps that cover the braces. though im not sure of how well this looks, and im pretty sure its a thing that you could only comfortable wear during photos but not while walking around.
i'll look into it more, im almost done with my cosplay and i have until april so thanks for the input!

I wish I could help more but the best I could offer is to ask your dentist about it since I do know the bond can be a little sensitive and things get caught in it. Good luck either way and if you do work out something I'm interested to hear what you end up doing.

There's a longer explanation in some of the other comments but the short of it.
Its sold within Europe as a children's toy, in order to be approved for this use it has to go through a number of hoops including be non toxic enough to be consumed by children.
Making sandwiches and having a meal of the stuff is probably going to mess you up but for the purposes of the tutorial it should only be in your mouth for the making of them and when taking a photo using them. So like everything else it is up to the person using the tutorial to make the decision that its the right method for their needs.

This is a brilliant tutorial! I'm actually waiting around while my teeth bake. Would you mind if I ask three questions?
Do you know if you can drink water while wearing these?
These attach themselves to your teeth due to the shape of them, yes? So, there isn't a glue or anything I should go out and buy?
Thank you so much!

I'm glad you're giving it a shot. To answer your questions. I wouldn't consume anything with it, the original purpose of the teeth was just for photo purposes. The couple times I've used them I've actually used a small denture case to keep them in when I didn't need them for photos.
As for fit you've got it, the natural moisture in your mouth/on your teeth will create a light suction when you slide them over your teeth and keep them in place. If they don't fit it means either they somehow changed shape as you were working with them or if you're younger your teeth may have shifted. From my understanding its somewhat normal for your teeth to shift a little over time, especially if you're under the age of 25. Somewhat related, when I was in middle school I lost one of my front adult teeth (the one between my 2 front teeth and canine tooth). By my sophomore year of high school the space was completely filled in as a result of my teeth shifting, though my front teeth are about half a millimeter off center.

Maybe you should edit the description to let everyone know (that doesn't bother to read comments) that it's not toxic. But then again, some people don't even bother reading artist's comments anymore...

I would imagine sculpey could work or another polymer clay (I know there's a japanese brand as well but I can't remember off the top of my head) but if I were in your place I would find a place online that would be willing to ship to your country.

Whoo! easy, inexpensive, and non-invasive or painful way to make you own sharp teeth! Thank-yoooooou!
So, if my understaning of the other comments is correct:
~ This certain type of clay is non-toxic.
~ Wear them only in pictures, as you won't be able to talk in them.
~ Even though it is regarded as a children's toy, it is not recomended you keep it in your mouth for an extended period of time.
~ The toxic ingredient was removed, so everyone can calm the fuck down.
~ don't make them too thin.
Is this right?
Also, I have a few questions:
~ Do you think I could make them a little thick, then sand them down to make them thinner? So my lip won't look all weird!
~ Do you think I could make the 'mold' out if pink 'fimo', and attach the white-ish fimo teeth to that? (is that a tip or a question? )
~ Does this fimo stuff need glazing or varnishing? (I've never used this stuff before, so I don't know anything . . . . . . at all) The only clay I've used is that crackly, crumbly, air dry stuff they give you at school! . . . . and that coloured stuff that never dies out . . . . So could you tell me what it's like when it is dry? (eg, cracky, flaky, or is it like a hard plastic-ish surface?) . . . . . could you compare it to a common household item? *bricked*

You have the general correct, it is considered a children's toy but is also still a polymer clay. So it isn't the safest thing if you expose yourself to it a lot. But for the intended use of the tutorial its fine.
To answer your questions,
I actually made my original pair a bit larger by accident and had to sand them down but I did something called wet sanding which is sanding it while wet or with water running over them. If you decide to do this make sure you get all of the sanding dust off of them. I would use an old toothbrush and give them a good washing if you decide to do this.
There are actually 2 methods I know of for cooking fimo, which is to bake and boil. When baking follow the instructions listed on the packaging. If you go over the clay will give off a smell and start to darken. For boiling bring the water up to a boil and put it in for 5 minutes or so should be enough, just make sure you use an old pot because you don't want to use it again for food. The baking and boiling process is when the clay is at its most "toxic" since it changes its chemical makeup through cooking off the chemicals which give it its soft texture.
Fimo when hardened is different from sculpey, which is why I have fimo in the description. If sculpey isn't baked properly or ages it is more likely to crumble when broken. Fimo on the other hand is more likely to snap in cleaner breaks. So in the worst case scenario of it falling apart in your mouth you'll have it crack or break in 2 or more larger pieces instead of a couple dozen tiny pieces.
As for sealing, there are sealants for clay but for this tutorial I wouldn't suggest them.
My biggest suggestion is get more than you think you would need for this (like 2 packages of transparent) and spend some time working with it and baking it to get an idea of what you're working with before you attempt the tutorial.

For the intended purposes of the tutorial, I made my set originally for a costume I didn't plan on wearing often enough to invest in the materials to make a high quality set. Also due to the style of teeth I knew comfort in speaking and other things would be out of the question, so my purposes were to just have a pair to put in for pictures and then take out again afterwards.
Both Fimo and Sculpey have been formulated to follow all health codes for their markets. Since it is considered a children's toy in Europe and it is assumed a child will end up consuming part of it the guidelines are especially strict for it.
That said I strongly suggest you do not use it in the long term, there are other methods you could use such as dental acrylic used to make false teeth. For that you can find a really good tutorial and supplies here [link] .

this would be ideal if the clay wasn't toxic. my husband has a tooth that grows from his gum, rather than the gum line. it's due to a baby tooth that was never removed. so, finding fangs that work for him is... impossible. if we had the money, i'd go the dental goop route, but... you know how it is.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
invader-gir In reply to kenlybop [2010-10-17 02:15:29 +0000 UTC]
I covered the toxicity issue further up but I will say the intended use for the tutorial isn't for something like glue on fangs which are meant to be worn for hours at a time. This is more supposed to be used more like the fake fangs commonly used by children or those wax teeth.
Originally I tried this method out because I planned on doing a costume of Viral from Gurren Lagan but knew I would have issues speaking If I did the glue in fang route. So I wanted something I could slide in and out of my mouth when needed.
So it may still be an option depending on your intended use.
