Description
After making my first set of Fimo teeth for a possible Viral costume I may make in the future I thought I would put together a tutorial for anyone else looking to try their hand at it.*EDIT*
commented below with a tip that may come in handy if the color ends up unnaturally white.
"i have a little tip for anyone reading this, to give your teeth that realistic look ad a tiny (AND I MEAN TINY) amount of tan clay, yellow, and an even smaller amount of black, it looks really good, i have tried something similair to this where i made single teeth and matched them to my teeth shade..."

I wanna try and make a set for my upper and bottom teeth... Will it affect my speech at all?
Great tutorial, btw! Really helpful!

It all depends on the thickness of the teeth. The original pair I made are a little on the thick side so it does affect my speech.
Though I wouldn't actually use this tutorial for teeth I planned on wearing for long periods of time. I made my original pair with the intention of only sliding them in for photos. If you want something to wear around for extended periods of time try here [link]

It's a good tutorial, although if I may offer a wee bit of advice- when you cast your teeth, try and find something called alginate (art shops and dental suppliers sell it, it comes in kits for casting baby hands and feet), it's totally non-toxic, tasteless, and when it's set it's fairly ridged so you get an accurate impression of your teeth. Just fill it up with plaster when it's set and then you can sculpt directly onto your teeth! You can also bake the Fimo teeth directly on the plaster teeth so they're a perfect fit Also, you can use the plaster teeth again when you want to make another set
I made some earlier if you wana have a lookie at them!

Thanks for the tip. I actually do have a box of it floating around from when I was going to cast a replica of my arm for a costume so I'll have to give a try.
And sure! I'd love to see what other people are doing with the tutorial.

teh-f43ry-pwnz In reply to Squidbillies [2010-05-24 23:47:57 +0000 UTC]
it's a type of clay that comes in different colors and hardens when baked in a regular oven (you don't need a kiln). have you heard of sculpy? I think its about the same thing. You can find this in any craft store β like Michaels or Beverleys β I believe.

There you go~~
For the second picture, I hot glued fake nails to the front of the base instead of using more Fimo for the teeth. It worked pretty well, but it cut my mouth up something chronic. :/

Sweet, love seeing what other people do with stuff like this.
And yea, I was considering fake nails myself but was actually worried about the same thing happening. Actually if you take a piece of sandpaper to the edges you might be able to round them out enough that they don't destroy your mouth as bad. Other than close up head shots its hard to tell how sharp teeth are so if you loose part of the tip it shouldn't be too bad.

Mileyx In reply to invader-gir [2009-11-30 08:23:16 +0000 UTC]
I did sand the edges of my teeth down, but it didn't really make any difference
I suppose trying to talk in them wasn't such a good idea.
If you take them out when not in photos/what not I think fake nails wouldn't cut that much.

Ouchy. I could only imagine after ending up with random sores in my mouth/where my gums meet the rest of my mouth (me thinks its allergy related since it only happens in the spring and fall when I'm an allergic mess to begin with). Its not fun having open wounds in the mouth.
I hope the other pair are more comfortable.

Thanks, this can be considered a bit of a last ditch tutorial when nothing else works and you need it ASAP. As soon as the need pops up I plan on buying a fang making kit from fx warehouse and making a tutorial on how to make proper fake teeth.

The major component most people had problems with was removed. I'm not going to say its %100 safe and should be munched down like candy but if you're in a pinch and only need it for temporary use it would work it.
Plus the filling for Oreo's is said to be a carcinogen in large quantities. So anything in excess is horrible for you.

Its called Fimo, you can buy it at most craft stores. You usually have the choice of that or Sculpey but its worth it to pay the little extra for Fimo.

hi! Is Fimo a polymer clay brand!? becasue its so hard to find polymer clay here in Riyadh... but i found fimo in one of the bookstores... so i just wanted to be sure its polymer clay before i buy it
π: 0 β©: 1
invader-gir In reply to linhatan [2009-03-08 05:46:31 +0000 UTC]
Yep, any type of clay you can bake in a normal oven and not in a kiln is considered a polymer clay from my understanding. It probably isn't the most polite thing to do, but bookstores normally aren't the first place one would go to buy clay from, so I would give it a little squeeze to make sure its not hard as a rock.
I once bought a couple bricks of clay from this random borders store (chain of bookstores in the US) and they all were either rocks, pastey messes (translucent sometimes does that) or crumbles apart. No idea how old it was when I bought it but the only one that ended up being used was the translucent one to soften up some other clay.
Lemme know if it helps.

How thixck would you make the mould? ive tried about 3 times but its allways to thin and crumbles
π: 0 β©: 1
invader-gir In reply to craiganater [2009-03-06 18:06:14 +0000 UTC]
For the finished product its a bit tough because if you make them too thick it will distort your upper lip.
If its while you're working on it then it should be a bit on the thin side other than around the tip of the tooth. What you're aiming for when putting it on the teeth is the clay to be pretty thin around the gum area of the tooth while the tips have roughly the thickness of 2 quarters on top of each other. If its too thick you can always go back and trim or sand it down.

Read the comments above before making an assumption or at least learn how to spell "toxic" before attempting to start an argument.

PissiPissiBauBau In reply to invader-gir [2009-02-06 18:41:18 +0000 UTC]
it's not an assumption -_-
fimo release toxins during processing and during cooking
you need to know better before to spell that i make "assumption"
π: 0 β©: 1
invader-gir In reply to PissiPissiBauBau [2009-02-06 21:37:13 +0000 UTC]
When you get right down to it being in the same room as the oven baking the fimo exposes you to the same chemicals. If you don't actually ingest any of the raw clay the exposure to said chemicals are minimal.
Like all other resources and tutorials it is up to the viewer to decide if it is worth making or not. When I decided to make my first pair it was with the understanding that Fimo is considered a children's toy. By being in that category is under extremely strict guidelines and is assumed that some kid out there is going to end up ingesting it.
"you need to know better before to spell that i make "assumption""
. . . What? I have no idea what you're trying to say with this.

"Hidden Hazards: Health Impacts of Toxins in Polymer Clays
2002-07-30
Executive Summary
[link] "
If you are going to do research about a topic try to at least keep it up to date. Since 2002 tighter restrictions have been passed through Europe and the US. The link below is a press statement released by the creators of Fimo.
[link]
Since you have refused to follow my suggestion to read the comments above your's where the very same topics were discussed I have copied the most relavent part of the press release below.
Why was the recipe changed?
All the FIMO products have been converted to a new recipe: FIMO classic, FIMO
soft and FIMO effect. You can see this from the hardening temperature of 110Β° C.
This step became necessary because, as of 17.01.2007, a new toy ordinance
came into force in Europe, which has prohibited certain phthalates β these are
softening agents. Eberhard Faber reacted to this in very good time and had
already converted all recipes to βhthalate freeβ by January 2006 β a whole year
before the EU-stipulated date.
I am going to hide your reply just to keep the huge wall of text from clogging things up but I will quote the subject and link you have provided which has the same information.
