20" x 30" oil on board..
You guys know me - I like my Vaders. So when I get a job brief that calls for "Vader standing in front of some Stormtroopers" my brain responds with "Vader leading an entire army of Stormtroopers in the most intimidating way you can think of but with a pretty sunrise. In oil paint." And then the following two weeks are the best kind of hell to get it done! For FFG's Star Wars: Destiny card game.

This is the BEST type of biplomat I have seen! Especially when there is a legion of stormtroopers and a fleet of ISDs there just in case things get.... problematic.

Thanks a lot! I actually do (and did) use 3D modeling when I'm creating reference material to paint from. So in a way you weren't wrong!

Fun fact, Obi-wan is often titled "The Negotiator" Jedi in the Star wars universe. A title that has a lot of similarities with "The Diplomat". Ironic since Obi-wan and Anakin are pseudo brothers to each other.

That's pretty cool! As big a fan as I am, I didn't know that about Obi-Wan. I just like using ironic titles when I can. Just adds another layer for the viewer's brains to process and get involved in the work, you know?

I'm pretty sureΒ "Vader leading an entire army of Stormtroopers in the most intimidating way you can think of but with a pretty sunrise. In oil paint" is the only acceptable interpretation ofΒ "Vader standing in front of some Stormtroopers." This is fantastic.
Only thing I'm not loving is the destroyer behind Vader's head. The big grayish shape sort of undercuts the contrast of Vader's black silhouette blotting out the sun and sky. You've got the bright sky behind his shoulders and off to the left, but directly behind him is this dull midtone. The pink bounce light helps, but I think it's also contributing to my feeling that the ship is smaller and closer than it really is.Β But heck, I'm far from an expert on lighting. I'm just going by feel here, so I may be entirely wrong. 
I do love the stormtroopers all lit up red. It adds to their air of menace, even if they're still nowhere near as scary as Vader himself. But then nobody's as scary as Vader. Except maybe the IRS.

Thanks a lot man! Yeah I have to say the star destroyers in the background were my biggest struggle with this one (which seems odd seeing as they're pretty simple compared to oh, a legion of Stormtroopers). Looking at it now almost a year later, I can tell really quickly that they should be much more blown out by the light of the sunrise, and with softer edges. That would pretty much solve the issues you mention with it (which I agree with). To be honest, I'm really tempted to go back in and repaint them, but with it being a licensed piece that's already been printed, I don't know if I am actually allowed to do that....Contracts are weird sometimes lol.

"I am altering the painting. Pray I do not alter it further"? Yeah, legal stuff makes my head spin. Interesting to read about in the abstract, but I'm glad I don't have a job that requires me to deal with it directly most of the time.
By the way, "The Diplomat" is a fantastic title.
