To be honest, I don't work much with fancy brush settings, so I'm not sure - you'd have to take a look and fiddle with things for yourself.

where can i find a brush that will give me a pointy edge on a single stroke? To have a pointy tip.

jocarra In reply to LadyAlluvia [2013-11-30 22:27:27 +0000 UTC]
Are you using a mouse?Β Because otherwise, pen sensitivity should allow you to do that yourself, just by pressing lighter where you want it thinner.

You may unfortunately be stuck with things, then Β Maybe ask for a cheap tablet for Christmas!Β I think Bamboo Wacoms are $100 or cheaper?
π: 0 β©: 1
LadyAlluvia In reply to jocarra [2013-11-30 23:31:26 +0000 UTC]
that would be 7 times more in my currency at least. Im unemployed and not sure even how tablet and ps work together. And asking my parents to buy it for me only so i would have pointy fur edges would be pretty selfish in my opinion... There should be another way to do this. Nobody appreciates my drawing anyway...
Thanks for communication anyway...

Maybe check out my first fur tutorial?Β (it's in my Tutorial folder)Β It mostly involves rough blocking, and then smudging - should be doable with a mouse Β You might have better luck with that?

What if the subject is a dark black..would you just use blues and grays rather than, say, a ton of browns, golds, and creams?
π: 0 β©: 1
jocarra In reply to lilywolftail [2013-08-27 01:04:44 +0000 UTC]
No, not necessarily - black is tough, in that there can be a good number of colours in it (same with white). I'd recommend for maximally realistic fur colours, to avoid using only blues, or only browns - ideally there should be a mixture of both sides of a complementary colour pair.

how long does it take to get all the fur details?
π: 0 β©: 1
jocarra In reply to catdoak [2013-05-19 04:56:48 +0000 UTC]
If I'm doing all the fur detail from scratch, no special brushes or anything, a lot longer - this particular image took about 15 hours?

Wow! What'd you use for this? I doubt its free. :/ All my art is traditional.
π: 0 β©: 1
jocarra In reply to MEG4LOVANIA [2013-04-26 13:57:17 +0000 UTC]
I used Photoshop, but any painting program should work with the basic techniques, as well as traditional - most traditional animal artists start by laying down an underpainting, then doing the fur detail on top! I believe typically a darker underpainting is used, then lighter, individual fur strokes laid down on top.
For graphite, I have a different tutorial for that, also in my gallery!

what do you mean when you said that you used " a eye brush to blotch in the grey for the nose..." ? I never heard of a brush named that way in Photoshop. Also, I would like to try out the experimenting brush.
Do you add a emboss filter after you're done with all the fur detail?
π: 0 β©: 1
jocarra In reply to magikwolf [2013-04-07 15:24:58 +0000 UTC]
Y'know, I have no idea! XD For that part, when I say "eyebrush" I really just mean normal round brush :b Not sure what I was thinking o_O
No, I don't add an emboss filter after I'm done with all the fur - this COULD be done if you did the fur on multiple layers, but requires the fur strands when you draw them to not overlap too much, otherwise you'll just emboss a single big lump, rather than make each strand look 3D. Haven't tried it myself!
