Heh, I don't often look up tutorials, either, but I do read them whenever one gets posted in my message center I wouldn't stress over it too much unless you really feel like you're sliding :b

Heh, that's what I do - I don't typically follow a tutorial step-by-step, but I read it, and try applying it my own way the next time I give it a try.

one thing I've been trying to figure out after looking at a lot of tutorials - you mention using a 3px brush, but at what size/resolution is the whole picture as you're working on it? Also, thanks for the lovely tutorial :3

jocarra In reply to AzuraRiverja [2011-12-19 23:48:44 +0000 UTC]

I worked at 1800x2400 - the closeups of the eyes, nose, forehead, and mane are all shown at 100% zoom, if that helps

Great tutorial!
The richness of the colours is amazing.
This is even a great tut for traditional painters because you basically follow the same steps. There are no "fur brushes" with traditional (well there are a few but the result is laughable..) so painting hair one-by-one is a must.
When painting with acrylics I always start by blocking, then reeeally rough fur just to set the idea, and then on from there.

jocarra In reply to LuxDani [2011-12-19 23:42:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, someone was asking me if I could make/if I knew of one for acrylics rather than digital. I think I've seen one around, but from what I've been able to tell from books and looking at people's WIPs and whatnot, I agree - the basic technique appears the same. Underpainting + some gradually refining of underpainting + stroke-by-stroke fur detail on top.

wow.

This is amazing. You have so much patience.... way much more than I have.
I think I'll keep my lazy method. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to SueaNoi [2011-12-19 23:39:21 +0000 UTC]

Haha, lazy method = fur brushes?

For me, my lazy method is scribbling :b I've never been particularly fond of brushes too much, can't be bothered figuring them out or messing around with them every time - if you don't, they look repetitive

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SueaNoi In reply to jocarra [2011-12-20 13:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Nope, fur brushes make arts look bad. (I've tried that)

I use scribbling too, scribbling the fur's dark shadow and smudge, and then scribble a little lighter detail on top. It's almost like your method but it's just far...far... less detailed.

Here is my best attempt. [link] Please see it If you'd like. It's not very realistic, though, Just semi-realistic is close enough for me.

jocarra In reply to SueaNoi [2011-12-20 13:54:01 +0000 UTC]

do you know anyone who might have made fur tutorials for painting with acrylics??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to wild-spirit-wolfgirl [2011-12-19 23:38:11 +0000 UTC]

I think I've seen one around, but I think it was on Fur Affinity. However, if it's any consolation, I believe the basic technique is the same - do an underpainting first, then layer on fur detail stroke by stroke. I've found the same works in graphite and pastel as well.

Haha, awesome Anyway, glad to have been of help! If you don't like this one, I'd maybe suggest one of my others ones (the first one especially is simple and could probably be easily bastardized into your own style). So... good luck!

jocarra In reply to MissDarlin [2011-12-19 07:33:55 +0000 UTC]

Haha, it always looks easy, until you try it x_x Although honestly, the hardest part is getting the underpainting looking good! Doing the fur detail is just a matter of patience, really, rather than skill.
