This is another amazing tutorial that is bound to be very handy when I finally find time to start attempting fur and hair painting myself. Thanks for taking the time to make it and share it with the rest of us!

Thank you for putting up this! Iยดm still new to digital drawing (got my tablet yesterday) so this helps a lot.....
With traditional pencils, I already get good fur results hope I get used to the tablet soon...

Oh! Congrats on your new tablet :3 Hope it treats you well If you've got a handle on traditional fur, digital shouldn't give you too much of a problem
Best of luck!

Wow this was extremely helpful! Thanks so much! If you don't mind me asking, how large are your canvases usually before you downsize?

jocarra In reply to whitefang4000 [2011-12-21 00:53:17 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome!
I never downsize the original, but typically my canvases are pretty small. This one was 1800x2400.

omg...I can't imagine the time to be consumed in this process alone...

It actually didn't take me as long as some of my old pictures took me O_O
This one took me about 20 hours. To compare, [link] (from 2007) took me about 25 hours. Nice to see I've kind of improved :b

hmm... a lot of those tools you used are unknown or disliked by me, but I still learned a good bit from this tutorial that I think will help me add some realism to my drawings.

Hmm, which tools in particular, out of curiosity? Blur?
Anyway, best of luck

AlphaGodith In reply to jocarra [2011-12-23 09:50:52 +0000 UTC]
actually blur I -am- familiar with. It's the noise, embossing, and all the weird opacity and multiplying and whatnot that gets me. I like just scribbling away with one or two brushes, not messing with any settings unless I want to screw with colors once I'm done.

jocarra In reply to AlphaGodith [2011-12-23 19:49:59 +0000 UTC]
I don't mess around with Photoshop filters all too often, either, but this just sort of happened this time :b
However, I -do- use Multiply, Screen, and to a much lesser extent, Overlay as either layer or brush settings. I tend to be terrible at colour-picking, so sometimes it's easier to just say "use this colour to make darker lines!" instead of picking a colour that's darker than one area, but not the other.
You get richer, paintier results, though, if you hand-pick colours, so I can't really argue at all for it being better - just simpler, if anything.
Sounds like you sort of avoid messing around with "magical Photoshop stuff" the way I tend to avoid messing around with brushes - doesn't feel good to me, just can't be bothered with them :b

Yeah, me too. I just use the simple marker tool in SAI, and that's it I mean I use the blur one, and sometimes I use airbrush, but I never use brushes that are like textured or anything and I don't even know HOW to use weird settings on my brushes.

you are very welcome. I just love your work - I always have and I just think it's awesome that you've taken the time to show how you do such amazing work. I don't get much time to sit at my computer to look up tutorials (which I should) in order to improve my skills and i guess it's time I did more searching cause I need to improve for sure...nothing is static..it either progresses or slides backward!!!
