Description You guys kept asking for it, so here it is!

Though maybe not what you were asking for.

Anyhow, I was drawing Maiden Flash and was going to make a video recording of the whole process with commentaries and stuff. But then it was too slow, and I gave up on it and instead shot the screen like 50 times during production - maybe for the better, since it took all day. AND I missed submitting it on Leap Day by like 3 hours. So tiiired....

Sorry if it's super rushed and vague and confusing - that's kind of how everything is on the internet.

EDIT: Oh yeah, super important - I use the paint brush tool, not the pencil/pen to draw. It's set at 50 smoothing, and I use the second smallest brush size for the line art. Plus, I'm using a tablet that allows me to control the stroke width using pressure sensitivity (you have to turn it on from the bottom of the tool bar).

dang, that's an awesome pic for being made in flash, flash isnt really for drawing or coloring, i know from trying in a 6 hour class X3 it was murder!

I'm gonna love you for this. Well, seems like you're acting hilarious even on tutorials! The name "Maiden Flash" made me laugh, and, may I ask that whether it is intentional or not to make the "MA" look like the Macromedia nd Adobe logos?



Well, I've got a few stuff to ask here:

[1] How to draw without having Flash adjusting the strokes or have it adjust them better? It is really annoying to see a curve ending up as a semi-circle!

[2] How do I control the thickness of the strokes more accurately? I possess a mouse - no drawing pad here.

[3] How do you determine whether to use multiple static colors or a gradient color for shading? I seem to like gradient more since it sounds more "accurate" to me.


General Flash questions:

[4] Using the pencil tool is rather annoying for me, it distorts my lines! When I turn the smoothing level down, another problem comes up that my drawings has become squarey! What to do?

[5] I use Flash 8. The Pen Tool is pretty hard to use, with Flash not knowing whether I want to select a point or to draw near that point when there are already stuff drawn and I want to add something. Other Flash 8 tools are pretty anoying too, like not being able to see the gradient transform "points" when using that tool under some circumstances (like when you're on the main stage or in a symbol). I don't know if that is my own problem. Will turning to Flash 9 make things better? What is the difference in terms of convenience in drawing between Flash 8 and CS3?

[1] You can adjust the shape/line recognition from the options in Edit-> Preferences
[2] Thickness cannot be controlled without a pressure sensitive tablet, unfortunately.
[3] It's up to user discretion. I typically use gradients in the background and cel-shading for stuff in the foreground.

[4] Use the brush! I don't bother with the pencil.
[5] Hm, I don't remember Flash 8 all to well, but I do remember that there wasn't much improvement on the drawing interface. Most of the effort was put into AS3 and some animation effects.

What were the final dimensions of your final piece? Flash auto puts it at 550 by 400. Do you usually change it?

Yup. The original dimensions were 300x400, but I exported it at 750x1000.

Nah. It's beginner scripting stuff like getting something to stop until it loads 100% Stuff someone like you would clearly probably have memorized -points at your flash movies and games- I've only been flash scripting for about 3 days total. I be a nubcake I'm getting most of it on my own though. I'll note you if I can't resolve them myself.
