Description
Oil on Canvas, 120cm X 90cm.First painting for the year.
Hooray.
It's a portrait of Marcy.
Been working on this forever. Maybe 150 hours..maybe more.
Here's some helpful WIP shots to give you all a sense of scale, and hopefully a sense that I really did have to paint the thing, starting with a white canvas...it was hard.

Finally a reasonable shot
I have a lot to say about it, but I'm going to let you work it out for yourselves, much more fun
*Hint- its about the trails of being a poet. See how you go.

no worries.
the other big tip in my opinion if you want to be a realist (which by no means is the one true style, but its one I like) is to work in monochrome for the first year or more, teach yourself to see tones, and that is really the key, and makes it easier to see reflected lights to start with also.
For ages even once I worked in colour I used a black and white reference as well, to help me see tones, but I'm past that now finally

monochrome is really good practice.
I also started with really maxed out contrasts in my references, as you lose a lot of detail and it makes it easier, then gradually bring it back to more normal lighting

hehehe
On a serious note however if I could I would be doing that, the more strong artists around at one time the better it is for everyone, take the impressionists or the surrealists for example.
Better for sales, respect and interest in the arts if everyone to has as much talents as possible.
so umm yeah *tries to share*
is it working?

Just...beautiful. Nothing more to say, really. The composition is perfect, the colors catching yet calm, and your skills as a painter remarkable. You're very lucky to have such a model.
Also, wicked button choker XD

AMAZING. You sir, have a great gift. Excellent work.
Only one question - how in the world did you get your piece into a digital format???
Did you scan it somehow? Just take a photo?

thank you kindly.
I take photos, with which I have endless frustrations, can never get it to look quite like the original, this one is not really as good as I would like in fact..
But yeah photo, then crop and square off slightly if I didn't get it quite straight on.

ah i know what you mean. Photos of art a lot of the time never look quite right. Having never seen the original though I'd never know - looks great to me!

yeah well it has that going for it, but its fairly frustrating when you spend so long balancing it all just so, then the photo looks wrong..

Same here! It first glance it was a photo but damn... and being a traditional piece makes it even more stunning! And the details you put in skincreases, nipples, the gloss in the eyes and necklaces are juz unbelievable!
