Description
Given that today (well, yesterday technically speaking given time zones) the first Japanese G Film released in Japan in 12 years, it's time for kaiju addicts to celebrate.Β This movie has already divided the fanbase like crazy based on the spoilers and plot synopsis, but honestly I'm just thrilled to know my favorite bad boy is BACK!Β Here's to many more years of fantastic new entries into the Godzilla series.(For those of you who aren't spoiler hounds and are confused by the beam, that is the only spoiler this picture depicts being that at one point in the movie the big guy's oral beam is VERY focused and laser beam like, but I promise I won't be posting any further spoilers on my art any time soon).

I'm definitely falling on the side of the fanbase that is all "Go for it, try something new", because honestly?Β I've watched G Films as long as I have memory, and I feel like Toho has needed a little incentive to try some new things.Β I'll see how it looks when I go see the movie in October but honestly I don't mind the changes in concept, the Big G is perfectly able to be adapted to new ideas if they're good.

Thanks, it's tough to do when you're just going on a handful of pics Β I think though the one good I have on this one are the claims I'm reading that G's jaw actually SPLITS open when he breathes his fire, gonna have to look into that for future renditions.

Me too, I can't wait to see it for myself and get a perspective on how well it turned out.Β I really can't wait for ALL the fandom to see it so that some of the panic can die away from old school and narrow-visioned fans who seem to be losing their minds at the moment over some of the characteristic changes with the Big G.Β I have a feeling the movie will be pretty well received Stateside once they give it a fair shake.

Yeah, from what I hear, they ended up with something closer to an allegory for that, which makes sense.Β And made fun of that fool too (which resulted in JSDF backing, because they don't like them either.)Β Heck, there's an equivalent to that plan (yes, that one) in the end that makes it feel pretty blatant.Β I guess it's sort of a coping measure for that, but it feels to me that it belittles the crushing reality for those folks who have to look the problem in the eye each day and night.Β (At least there's some slow progress being made towards SAFSTOR and DECON, but...hm.)
I'm not sure if the Kentucky Carbonized Chicken look is that good compared to the iconic BioGoji (although I'm biased), but eh, they tweak the appearance with every film.

This is GREAT! I love it!
Without spoiling anything, I was wondering if you can answer some questions I had about this movie/monster (haven't seen the movie yet). Again I want you to answer (to the best of your abilities) without spoiling anything to me (and others) who haven't seen this amazing film.
1: What did you think of the film? Was it (as early teasers and this monster's look suggested) a modern day version of the original 1954 Gojira film?
2: I had seen the trailer (and cool concept art) of this Shin Gojira charging its violet Atomic Breath. A violet atomic breath would be hotter and more dangerous a breath weapon. I don't mind it being laser focused (on the contrary, it's a neat idea; laser can travel farther and faster than the flame thrower style breath's we've come to know for a lot of Gojiras). Is the breath weapon destructive (meaning does it explode the targets it hits) or is it just more of a cutting weapon?
3: Since you've seen Shin Gojira in action, would you saw he would win against the Final Wars Gojira in a one-on-one fight?

Sorry I actually have not seen the film Β I have a very close friend who lives in Japan and saw it yesterday and we talked about it a bit, and other friends I have from the fandom went and saw it as well.Β Everything I know is either second hand information or from leaked pictures from the theatrical guidebook they gave people who attended the movie, those photos are the basis of what I drew here.Β Based on what my friends have shared the energy attacks are varied and very powerful, and some of them unexpected for sure, but the one thing they made very clear is this is a formidable Godzilla who is effectively walking death.Β I think it's safe to say that if you're familiar with Evangelion and know what the Angels were like, it's a good comparison to how Godzilla feels in this movie, relentless and powerful.

One comment kind of said it all to me over at the Toho Kingdom forums; "Well, this is crap, but at least I can look forward to Legendary 2, at least THAT will have some good old Showa series goodness to look forward to".Β I never thought I'd live to see the day when a Godzilla fan would say he was looking more forward to an AMERICAN G film to give him "real" Godzilla over an original, legit Toho feature XD

CitizenKahne In reply to KaijuKid [2016-07-29 21:30:33 +0000 UTC]
To be fair, we were expecting Godzilla to look like his Heisei or Millennium self and we were expecting the atomic breath to resemble a fiery beam of atomic radiation, like it normally does. Plus, the Legendary movie did set the bar pretty high, despite the criticisms.Β

Yeah I have pretty much heard about the....."multiple" beam things. And while I will not cry betrayal...it does bug me a little bit. I don't mind them trying something new. But it always seems that a director wants to change an established character to what they think it should be.
π: 0 β©: 1
KaijuKid In reply to earthbaragon [2016-07-29 18:04:04 +0000 UTC]
There's definitely truth in that, though I think honestly many directors in Godzilla's past have shifted him to fit either their agenda or the needs of Toho at the time. Knowing Anno I'm really not surprised that this version not only is a force of destruction, but something strange and almost horrifically alien to what Godzilla has been before, because for Anno it seems that the more unpredictably alien a creature is the more terror comes with it, which is why they've changed him so much in this movie.Β At face value a lot of these changes don't bother me, it's no more absurd than say Super Godzilla or things like that have been, but I still need to see some of it play out to get a real feel for the intentions behind it.Β The spoilers I read about the ending are....absolutely nuts, and I'm torn about whether it's genius or just plain ridiculous.Β Time shall tell

So, I understand this is just one of his beams, I don't mind that he can change the size of his beam, but I would ask, is this film good? Is Godzilla relatively still like all the other incarnations, or does this one do a bunch of WACKY bizarre stuff that Godzilla films wouldn't DREAM of any other Godzilla doing?
π: 0 β©: 1
KaijuKid In reply to darthlord1997 [2016-07-29 17:27:46 +0000 UTC]
Based on the early reviews from Americans who went to see it they and the Japanese critics agree that it's VERY good, but acknowledge that a lot of fans are going to be ticked at the changes.Β I've already seen a stupid movement of "This is Zilla/GINO 2!Β They've RUINED Godzilla!"Β kneejerk garbage going around the internet already, but anybody who is familiar with Hideaki Anno's work knew going in this was not going to be a traditional Godzilla and would have very strange elements.Β It clearly does based on accounts, but at the same time the word of mouth has been that this is a very strong, scary and unique interpretation of the character unlike anything we've yet seen, and I for one am enthusiastic about it because if there's one thing Godzilla's always been able to do is perform in a new context while not losing the essence of the character, which is a towering force of destruction.Β
Some of the leaked info is super strange and I'll make up my own mind when I see how just how "too extreme" or ok it is, but I think in time the fanboys will come to accept it as a new vision for the character that doesn't disrespect or harm the monster they love, but only really adds a new layer to him.

As with all of my favorite things, if a movie is done I prefer they concentrate on getting the look correct first. Having said that, I'm just not digging the Shin Godzilla so far. I hope the finished product proves me wrong.
