Chapter 3 - Shadows of Corruption
The next morning, Envy found Andrew shooting some slimes with his bow.
“Oh hey, you’re awake.” Andrew said as he saw her behind him.
“Hi, Andrew.” Envy said. “What are you doing?”
“Just doing some target practice.” Andrew answered as he shot another slime.
“You don’t mind if I?” Envy asked as she pointed at the dead slimes.
“No, go ahead.” Andrew said. Envy went over and harvested all the gel from the deceased slimes. She then put it all in her inventory and returned to Andrew. “I see you’ve been liking the taste of the gel.” he assumed.
“Yeah, you weren’t kidding. It tastes pretty good.” Envy replied.
“Be careful now. You don’t want to get a stomach ache from eating too much.” Andrew said.
“You know, I kinda feel better after finding that magic mirror back in the caves. I won’t have to worry about getting lost anymore.” Envy said.
“You should, Envy,” Andrew said, “The magic mirror is a perfect tool to use to make a quick escape.”
"Anyways, what do you think I should do today?" Envy asked.
"Well, you went mining yesterday, right?" Andrew asked.
"Yes." Envy answered.
"If you have any stone or iron, you should be able to make a furnace and anvil," Andrew explained, "With those, you can smelt your ore into bars and make them into weapons and armor. Either do that, or you can hang out with me if you need any tips."
"Hello, over there!" A voice shouted. In the distance, there was a man with a white beard and brown hat. He appeared to be waving at Envy and Andrew.
"Andrew, who is that?" Envy asked.
"No clue, Envy." Andrew answered. Envy approached by air and landed right in front of him.
"Hello, sir. How can I help you?" Envy asked the man.
"Are you trying to make an anvil, but don't have enough iron? Don't worry, I got one right here!" the man said as he pulled out an iron anvil and placed it on the ground.
“Wait, you’re a merchant?” Envy asked.
“Why yes ma’am, I am,” the merchant answered, “I’ve got this anvil, a furnace, torches, basic stuff.”
“Oh. Well, I’ll take the anvil.” Envy said.
“You sure you don’t want the furnace too?” the merchant asked.
“Nah, it’s ok. I went mining yesterday.” Envy said.
“Very well then. That’ll be 50 silver please.” the merchant requested as he held out his hand.
“I’m sorry, what?” Envy asked.
“50 silver. You know, as in money or coins. You got some, right?” the merchant asked. Envy began to nervously sweat. She didn’t know if she had any silver coins.
“Umm….One moment…” she said. She opened her inventory and by surprise, she had over 100 silver coins. Without hesitation, Envy took 50 of them out. The coins appeared in her hand as she did so.
“See, I knew you had some.” the merchant said.
“Yeah, I guess I did have some silver after all.” Envy said as she handed him the coins. She then lifted the heavy anvil with all her might and managed to squeeze it into her inventory.
“Pleasure doing business with you, young lady. My name’s Fredrick by the way.” the merchant said.
“I’m Envy. It’s nice to meet you.” Envy said. Over to the right, a slime splattered into gel as an arrow was shot at it.
“Got another one!” a voice said. Envy turned around and saw Andrew.
“Hey, Andrew.” she said.
“Sorry if I interrupted y’all.” Andrew apologized.
“Nah, you didn’t.” Frederick said.
“Andrew, this is Fredrick. He’s a merchant.” Envy said.
“Yes sir I am,” Fredrick said, “She just bought one of my anvils.”
“Nice to meet you, Frederick.” Andrew said, “What brings you out here?”
“Well you see, I didn’t come out here just to get some good deals.” Frederick explained, “I used to live in a trading outpost I had farther west. It was pretty peaceful. Travelers would come by day by day to buy some of my stuff. Recently however, it got raided and burned down by a bunch of goblins.”
“Did you say goblins?” Andrew asked.
“Yes, goblins!” Frederick cried. “I had no other choice but to flee into the forest. And that’s how I ended up here.”
“What’s a goblin?” Envy asked.
“Goblins are mischievous green creatures that are native here,” Andrew explained, “They’re known for their practice in shadowflame magic and raids across the land. They’re also very unfriendly. Trust me, I’ve crossed paths with them before.”
“How long ago did this happen, Frederick?” Envy asked.
“It happened last night,” Frederick answered, “I highly doubt they’re still there if you’re planning on catching them.”
“Well even if I were, I would need something stronger than this.” Envy said as she knocked on her wood armor.
“Indeed, Envy,” Andrew said, “If you chose to go fight the goblins in your current gear, you would be dead. The goblins usually like to attack in armies.”
“So, what type of gear do you recommend?” Envy asked.
“I highly suggest armor that’s made of tungsten, Envy,” Andrew answered, “It’s the strongest material you can collect as of now. There are other materials far stronger than that though. The issue is, you would need to face very dangerous foes in order to do so.”
“Can we just go inside for this? I’m kinda getting tired just standing here.” Envy said.
“Fine, we’ll go in.” Andrew said.
“Wait, is it ok if I stay with y’all? I really don’t have anywhere else to go.” Frederick asked. Envy looked at Andrew for a second and then back at Frederick.
“You know what, sure. You can, Frederick.” Envy said. “We can renovate the house as we go.”
“Thank you so much!” Frederick said. A week later, Envy managed to acquire a full set of tungsten armor, as well as a wooden yoyo and a tungsten sword, hammer and pickaxe. Throughout that time, she encountered 3 more strangers. A dwarf demolitionist named Dolgrim, a dye trader named Akbar, and a nurse named Holly. Because there were so many people living in the house now, Envy had to expand the house. One day, Envy decided to explore further west. Deep within the woods, she found a giant tree with remnants of a burnt down house in front of it. The abandoned scorched structure looked like it had been thrashed too. Envy assumed that this was Frederick’s old home, she recalled him telling her what happened. After walking for a while, she finally came across something different. The air was cold and there was snow falling. She then entered the snow biome.
“Wow! This place is beautiful.” Envy said, looking around at the snowy forest. “Probably should’ve brought something warm though.” She started to shiver a little bit as the wind blew. An ice slime then landed right in front of her. Envy shrieked and stomped on it. The gel was ice cold when she picked it up. Despite her condition, she continued on. Further past the snow biome, Envy began to come across something abnormal. The sky gave off a purple hue, almost everything around her was purple, and a rotten smell lingered in the air, almost making her puke. There were also chasms and holes everywhere. “What is this?” Envy said in curiosity, as she looked at the infected land. “This is like... some kind of infection.” Suddenly, a flying monster swooped down at Envy from behind and bit her. Envy yelled in pain. She looked up at the monster as it soared back up into the air. It had purple skin, rotted fangs, and several disgusting eyes, yet no limbs. When the monster came in for a second attack, Envy sliced it in half with her sword. The monster screeched as its body splattered in green blood. Envy gagged as it gave off a putrid stench. Shortly after, more of the fanged monsters started to appear. Envy had no choice but to run. As she did, she accidentally fell into one of the chasms, making her go unconscious.
Envy woke up a while later. She couldn’t see. It was so dark. She pulled out a torch and examined the cave around her. It was all covered in a rough, dark purple rock. There were also strange altars surrounding her that looked like the monsters she encountered. Further into the cave, there was a pit with something glowing at the bottom. Envy jumped down there and used her wings to break her fall. When she landed, she could now see what it was. It was a dark purple shadow orb. Envy tried to see if she could break it with her pickaxe, but it didn’t work. So, she pulled out her tungsten hammer and smashed it. As soon as she shattered the orb though, she felt a horrible chill go down her spine. Envy now had a suspicious feeling that she was not alone. When Envy returned to the surface, she noticed it was nighttime. Not only that, but the land was blanketed in a red light. "Huh, this is new." Envy said in surprise. "How long have I been down there?" Envy pulled out her magic mirror and warped home. Back at the house, Envy reappeared next to Andrew.
"Envy, thank goodness you’re back!" Andrew said.
“Oh hey, Andrew. What's up?” Envy asked.
“The Blood Moon is rising, Envy!” Andrew responded. That was when they heard a noise from downstairs.
