Description
Another tutorial in my ongoing review of my anatomy notes. The same as before, the info is compiled from Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Stephen Rogers Peck as well as notes from Aaron Board's (www.aaronboard.com ) Figure Anatomy class at Ringling.Related content

Thank you.
No, not really... there aren't as many visual "tricks" to the back, you know?
If you're interested in further improving your anatomy skills I'd highly recommend you pick up the book I referenced in this tutorial, though. It's an *excellent* resource for anatomy, AND it's super cheap to boot. It was the least expensive textbook I had the entire time I was in college and nearly 10 years after graduating it's STILL within arm's reach of my work area and I refer to it quite a bit. I can't sing its praises highly enough... which is why I recommend it to everybody and their dog, regardless of current skill level.

I like your tutorial because it's a simplified version of the information found in anatomy art books. I heard about the book that you recommend. I will definitely check it out. Thank you so much for sharing!!!Β Β

Thanks, very interesting. And, thanks for references, been using Grey's Anatomy [the book, not the series].

legit question. The color coded part at the very top. Why are the nipples square?
π: 0 β©: 1
KrisCynical In reply to akchrome [2015-01-25 07:25:23 +0000 UTC]
The nipple is round. The square shape you see is the skin surrounding the nipple, because Peck drew these diagrams as though the surface flesh was cut away. He left the surface of the nipple there as a reference for where the nipple should sit on the pectorals.

I'm sorry to be the prick to say this, because there's really no need to, but I feel unnecessarily proud that I did not flinch at the scientific words for these because I'm taking anatomy/physiology for reasons like making my drawings anatomically correct.
Less proud because I still really needed this tutorial, thanks for making it!

I don't think that makes you sound like a prick at all.
I highly recommend you get a copy of the book mentioned in this tutorial if you're trying to improve your anatomy. It'll help a lot!

Hey, I have a question about the serratus. There are 5 of them but you drew 3. I know the first doesn't appear because it's next to the chest and the oblique doesn't go till there... But what about the 5ΒΊ one? It never appear? Even if the male is on side view?
π: 0 β©: 1
KrisCynical In reply to Ametystical [2013-04-05 06:29:30 +0000 UTC]
I wasn't going for textbook accuracy on the drawing there but just a visual to make my point. But no, you usually don't HAVE to draw five.

In the case of the naval, I have doubts... [link] like on this, most anatomy figures show it being under the third set of abdominals

I think the tuturial is correct. If you want to, go to this site [link] scroll the page down and look up the 2ΒΊ and 3ΒΊ images; they're very detailed and they show the shape of the abs as well as the 8 abs muscles and where the rib cage is , it might help

Peck's book has been in constant publication for over 60 years and the prof who taught the class is a master figure painter and has taught anatomy for nearly 20 years. I'm going to continue to go with what I have shown here.

Looking around a bit I have to say I've seen both versions, with many cases where it was between the third set in varying heights. Just sayin'.

THANK YOU so much for this tutorial!!!! I'm currently trying to practice more with male anatomy, and with the male torso I tend to screw up. Plus, I'm tired of seeing all the "multi-package man" drawings on dA, because seriously, real abs do NOT look like that. At all. Especially if they look chiseled in.

KrisCynical In reply to CustardAndPie [2012-09-25 10:35:54 +0000 UTC]
The book I reference in this tutorial would be really good for male anatomy, but you'd have to get your parents' permission first before getting it because there ARE a few photos of full-frontal nude male figure models in the back that they might want to censor with a Sharpie or something given your age. I don't know how strict they are. You can find it on amazon for roughly $12 new.

wuhhaahh .... >,<) this is really help me for learn it also kris san you explain it with simple explanation. about the six pack ... it is because our movement limit that ?
π: 0 β©: 1
KrisCynical In reply to kaitsuart [2012-09-09 04:40:52 +0000 UTC]
I take it you mean does our movement limit the abs to six being visible? If so, no, it isn't our movement. It's just the way we're built.

You have no idea how much I started laughing at the "GOD NO D8<" on the chiselled blocks abs. I find myself falling into that accidentally at times with painting, then step back from my image when I think it's finished and go "OH GOD NO D8<" myself XD
Excellent tut.

OMG! THANK YOU! I have been looking for a simple and down to earth explanation of some aspects of the male human torso, but until now all I've managed to find are complex studies by other people and I was unable to understand what exactly I was looking at, until I found this. Again, thank you!

Oh my goodness! I cannot STAND the chiseled, blocky abs. I see them so much and I find them to be very unattractive. Typically, looking like that usually means some guy works out TOO much and has probably starved himself at some point to make the muscles more prominent. Not cool. The smoother abs you outlined are MUCH more natural, much more attractive.
Good points! I'll try to remember them!
