Description A Starfield Tutorial is finally up.

Not much to say here really, this is how I make my stars, atleast the basics of it. This is really no "new things" at all. it's basicly all the things people probably have done for years 'n years but since the starfield tutorials out here today, most of 'em, only keeps explaining with the noise fields and flares and whatnot I thought It could be good to put this down on paper.

I think it's fairly clean in terms of spelling and such.

There's a lot of text so get your reading glasses on and let's go!

Its a good start but you need to play around more with variation and contrast.

Hi there,

remember us? I just wanted to tell you that we uploaded this tutorial to the club. [link]

We don't usually notify long-time members, but it's been over a year since we put your other tutorial [link] in our gallery so I thought I'd just give you a heads-up in case you don't want your work displayed there anymore.

Anyhow, it's a lovely tutorial and as beautifully presented as your other one. Thank you very much for writing it! (I remember those lens flare star field tuts too )

Sincerely,
Eil

Awesome tutorial, but I felt like when you got the the background you just kind of rushed through it. How did you do that background?

ladyrapid In reply to macr0planet [2009-03-24 20:29:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. The tutorial is only for the stars and not the background. That's only added to view the stars better.

Daylight In reply to ??? [2009-03-20 18:08:01 +0000 UTC]

Nice tutorial but the spelling isn't really all that clean sorry, had to remark on that.

I do have a question. I'm working on a piece that's 3840x2400 meaning that I have a lot of room. How do I guarentee a reasonable level of randomness? It's hard to be random :\ is It ok to use a noise map just as a reasonable placeholder to generate proper randomness or do noise maps pattern up at such large sizes?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ladyrapid In reply to Daylight [2009-03-20 19:47:45 +0000 UTC]

I know the spelling aint all that good ;D, wrote it late night and sometimes the fingers goes faster than the mind hehe.

The bad thing about noise maps is that it's all very close together in position.
I know random is hard to "create".
The trick I think is to only "make the damn stars" and when you've done a couple, start copying the ones you've made.
A thing many do wrong is that when they copy+paste the stars they just do it simple and don't rotate/rezise it anything which will lead you getting a pattern-ed starfield which can easily be read as repetitive.

Daylight In reply to ladyrapid [2009-03-21 18:42:53 +0000 UTC]

I tried to compromise a bit. I added some extra entropy to the brush by setting scattering and spacing to as high as they'll go and then just threw tiny stars all over the place. But afterwards, rather than repainting them I just duplicated the layer, set the top one to linear dodge, blurred the bottom one to a nice glowy look and then duplicated the unblurred layer a few more times to make the stars pop out. I didn't add any bigger stars because they would have, in my opinion, detracted from the rest of the scene. Anyway, here's the final result [link] I think it turned out to be a rather reasonable hybrid of your technique and layer cleverness.
