Description
A Starfield Tutorial is finally up.Not much to say here really, this is how I make my stars, atleast the basics of it. This is really no "new things" at all. it's basicly all the things people probably have done for years 'n years but since the starfield tutorials out here today, most of 'em, only keeps explaining with the noise fields and flares and whatnot I thought It could be good to put this down on paper.
I think it's fairly clean in terms of spelling and such.
There's a lot of text so get your reading glasses on and let's go!
Created in CS4. Wacom, Volito2
Enjoy!

Wow. This goes perfectly with my "the more time you spend on work the better it looks" philosophy.

It's nothing fancy if you think so, it's just a steady tutorial on how I think you should create stars in a simple way

Thank you, Robin. How can the stars at the end of the tutorial -- with all the flaring reflections and rays -- be made? Will you show that sometime?
Thank you again. A fantastic tutorial.

They're made in easy ways.
Grab the rectangle marquee tool (M) and draw a shape that's about 100% wide and 20% tall. Here you'll make a gradient. Take for example white as a foreground color. Now chose a gradient that goes from white to nothing and drag the gradient from left to right within the selection. Here you now have 1 "ray". This you now can duplicate and spin around for your own satesfaction. ALso you can vary them in thickness and length as well as blur them for sweet "glow" effect.
It's not very hard .

Thanks so much! I'm going to give this a try shortly and I really liked the ray effects.

the spikes are simple; you only duplicate the star and then you free transform it so that its height is about 5% and its width is 400%, you duplicate rotate that stuff around and have differently transformed spikes and you can end up with such effects.

. We all have our ways, this is the one I found works kickass for me. I do have a couple other steps when I go about messin' around but this is the way I go at it.
You make 'em in 3D? I tried that before and the dynamics of the starscape gets so damn cool, just think alot if get's lost when using so vivid colors I often do and therefore I quit workin the 3D stars.

Chromattix In reply to ladyrapid [2009-03-02 22:47:59 +0000 UTC]
Nah, special effects like stars, nebulae and such I'm just better off drawing in Photoshop. 3D is only for things like the planets (depends on what effect I'm going for, if I want realism I'll map my planet textures on a 3D sphere, if a bit more dramatic or fantasy-like scene is required, I'll just do them the usual way in Photoshop) and also for asteroids, or the landscape below a space scene.
I'm working on some planets made using fully procedural (non image-mapped) materials in Vue though, and different spheres making different layers, and so far have made some pretty damn good earth-like planets and gas giants I'm currecntly seeing how I can exploit Vue's other features to make things like nebulae too, I wan't to prove that Vue alone can make some dynamic space scenes, which is gold for those with that but no Photoshop (or skills in it
)
