Gah Ive been inspecting this tutorial to death for the past like 2 months. Its wonderful btw <3 Ive been waiting to get suplies to try it out xD
But uhm. one question! To be on the safe side..
How many sets of horns can you make from a 2lb thing of model magic?
Currently Im planning for Sollux, Nepeta and Vriska.

For the bucket, you'd be able to use a package and a half really and there are four packages in the 2 pound bucket. So I'm not sure if it would be cheaper to get the little packages on their own that they should have in the Crayola section.

I hope that helps!

can we use a hair dryer on it

Lambentworld In reply to hell-kill [2012-02-04 11:11:23 +0000 UTC]

I would not suggest it. Like most blow dryers[even on a cool setting] you have to compare it to hair. Yes it dries quickly but it leaves your hair brittle, damaged and weaker.

As much as people do want to hurry the process, I assure you, the wait is worth it when they're dry which makes them easier to paint and mount without having to worry about them being too squishy or flexible.

for controlling the air flow for a slow dry, does it matter if the bin is closed or open? I don't want the horns to crack but I get impatient when I start a cosplay project.

Lambentworld In reply to Kuuriku-sky-shore [2012-01-28 09:33:33 +0000 UTC]

Sadly with things like this, yes you will need to constrict air flow with a crack of the lid to let a little air in at a time. If you expose it to too much air, it dries quickly and that's how cracks are formed. Another way to help is to try ad get rid of seam lines by kneading it like dough.

Good luck ;3;

Very helpful tutorial!
How much do you need for, let's say, Gamzee's horns? Is 2.5lbs enough?
And lastly, is Crayola Air Dry Clay the same, or does it have to be Model Magic?
Sorry for all the questions xD

Will these work for tavros horns?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lambentworld In reply to Xerras [2011-12-24 14:40:47 +0000 UTC]

Possibly but they'll be heavy and prone to collapsing. I'd suggest using foam first to sculpt the shape then add a small layer of model magic and sand smooth.

Lambentworld In reply to Xerras [2011-12-25 05:50:01 +0000 UTC]

At Home Depot or any other hardware store, there's something called Expanding Foam. It's foam in a can that you can mold in to the shape you want then sand it or take a box cuter to shape it and smooth it out. Using the model magic and rolling it like dough, you can create a skin around it so you have the shape with the foam making it super light weight.

I'm making a pair of Condesce horns for my cosplay and using insulation foam as my main structure... Do you think that putting model magic over them would be a good idea?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lambentworld In reply to Namineswishes [2011-12-06 04:25:13 +0000 UTC]

I have heard mixed reviews about using model magic over the expanding foam.

One thing I heard that worked really well for a girl who did them beautifully was Spackle which you can find at a Home Depo in the Wall Section. You can kind lightly sand the foam in to the shape you want and use the spackle over top to fill in the air pockets and smooth it over with lots of sanding.

I hope that helped.

How hard do these dry out to be? I tried making some but didnt let them dry as long as you did and were sad to see they were still squishy.
Can you compare it to anything?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lambentworld In reply to MelodyxRage [2011-12-05 21:50:17 +0000 UTC]

Sorry ;A; I've been swamped and came down with a minor flu but ogdiof no excuse I'M SORRY THOUGH.

If you squeeze them they should have a hallow hardness to them. They should feel light but still have enough of a body that you can't squeeze too hard on it. If it still has a bit of a mushy feel then let it go for another day or so. In time you'll learn to understand different feels of the model magic ;3;

Timyxaora In reply to ??? [2011-11-26 02:56:11 +0000 UTC]

also, what would you suggest I do to fix this? Should I just start over? I really don't want to as it took one pack of model magic for each horn.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Timyxaora In reply to ??? [2011-11-26 01:48:08 +0000 UTC]

When you allow them to pre-dry...after you've molded your horns...will the model magic not make the one side it's placed on to flatten?

I didn't pre-dry the model magic and...the one side that was on the table flattened. ;w;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lambentworld In reply to Timyxaora [2011-11-28 04:11:35 +0000 UTC]

I usually just turn them every few hours or so. When I go to sleep, I try and stand them up or at least use a curved surface to prop the bigger ones on then in the morning I make sure they're okay and turn them some more ;; With ones like Eridan, you're going to probably have a flat area here or there but you can sand a curve to them if you use a fine grit sand paper!

I hope that helped a bit ;A;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Timyxaora In reply to Lambentworld [2011-11-28 05:33:01 +0000 UTC]

OTL
Why did I never think of using dowels so they'd be standing up? *headesk*
Hmm..I guess that means with mine...it's back to the drawing board since the one side is fully flat and my characters horns are pretty big. ID;;
Thanks for the advice. :3

So I couldn't find a big package of Model Magic, but I did find some boxes of small packets of it in assorted colors. Since I'm painting over it anyway, would mixing a bunch of different colors together to get enough clay together work all right?

Also, I know using a hair dryer is probably a huge no-no, but do you think it'd be okay if I were to fill all the cracks the dryer makes with super glue?

Hello! I was hoping to sew my horns to a wig, but I didn't know whether or not I could leave toothpicks (horizontally) in the base in order to keep the holes, or will that crack? Also, should the horns crack, how would you suggest applying the super glue so it doesn't get all over hands and such? <3 Thanks for making this by the way! Soooo helpful. ;w;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lambentworld In reply to GR1MA [2011-09-14 03:43:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually not sure on that. I really do hope to experiment on how to make sort of, slide in devices so the headband can be worn under the wigs and the smaller horns slipped on [things like the bigger horns are tough since they need as much sturdy base as they can get].

With the super glue and cracks, I have the super glue with the long beak I guess? it makes for filling things in easily but sometimes you might get it o your hands. Just be careful cause it burns ;A;. [Image is of the glue I have.] [link]

I hope that helps a little ;A; feel free to ask more questions.

At what stage during creation would adding screws/metal internal support to the horns be the best? For a screw I was thinking of just drilling into the horn's base to attach it to the headband and using super glue.

I have a question though. Will loads of super glue be enough to hold TAVROS horns onto a headband or is there another method? They're humongous!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lambentworld In reply to blackrockchocolate [2011-08-13 11:08:59 +0000 UTC]

I'm currently trying to see if there's another method ;; but so far I haven't found any other than just making a nice solid base build up with super glue on the Tavros horns ;A; If I do find another way to get them on I will be more than happy to share but for now this is the only I really know to get a nice solid looking Tavros set ;; I've seen some amazing Tavros horns and I wish I could go up to people and inspect them without looking like a creeper. As long as you don't thrash your head around or hop up and down and remember that these are BIG props on your head then they're pretty secure. I hope that helps! ;;

I just made a pair of Nepeta and Equius horns. It's much harder than it looks, and I had a lot of trouble with Equius' arrow horn. I couldn't get most of the seams out and it's starting to crack. All I have to do is put superglue in the cracks?
Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lambentworld In reply to Flygonz [2011-08-12 16:12:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, usually I put super glue in the cracks so it's kind of an even like surface? then sand it smooth and paint usually does a great job of covering any seams up. For painting, I usually add about 4 coats of the middle orange then add on the darker and lighter spots.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lambentworld In reply to dragondancer123 [2011-08-12 16:12:59 +0000 UTC]

Not that easy unless you're trying. Just be mindful when you do move your head cause I sometimes forget they're on my head and can slip off ;; Some can fall and nothing happen to them, others might snap in various places from impact. I usually put a few large bobby pins in my hair to keep the headband in place.
