Ooooh, so THIS is what the reverse lens thing is. For some reason, I didn't think that it was LITERALLY just reversing the lens.

Do you know if this will work with the Canon XSi?

Yah, it'll work for the XSi.

so you have to hold the lens against the camera body while manually focusing?

if only I was smart enough to understand, this tutorial is great

Does this work on a 40D.. and does the lense that you are using matter? please could someone let me no.. id really appreciate it thanks =]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wulthur In reply to spineless-splendour [2008-02-19 11:46:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes, as I know it works with every SLR that is capable of using the shutter with no lens connected.
You can also buy the "reverse mount macro adapter' like that one Electric-Phoenix mentioned. I'm using one since some month' and I'm happy with it. The adapter I'm using is Canon EF <-> 58 mm filter, maybe there are other sizes. Otherwise you can use filteradapters that are avaiable for small money.
This works with every lens, even with non-Canon-lenses. Very best are old manual lenses that give you also the possibility to change the aperture manually.
There is also a solution out there that gives you all possibilities of the lens as if correctly mounted - but it is expensive, and only for Canon-EF-lenses. I think it's about 500 USD.
I hope this helps.

BTW, what about shutter? I need like use ISO 1600 to get 1/20, with ISO 200 i cant get a thing in the image even with 20".

Tryed that with Nikon D40. Works.

yeah i've already test it and it works just fine and it works with almost everylents ..then i ask my teachers of optics to explain my why i obtain this focus with the reversed lens and he give me a very good and long explication about it ..if someone is interested of the physical properties of that..i can send him a copy of my notes

Nice.

In theory, you can do this with any equiptment that has the resulting focus spot outside the camera. And the further you manage to move your lens, the greater magnification untill the lens is so far it is shown on the image.
The only problem getting greater magnification is the extra light getting to the shutter. I mean, you could build a cardboard extension to the objective to get even "closer" to the subject.

Anyway, be careful when handling the lens!!!
I managed to drop my 50mm 1.8 Canon on the floor from 30cm high, it went to two pieces since one tiny plastic thing broke.
I'm getting tamron 17-50mm 2.8 anyway next week and 5 old Soviet lenses when I get the M42 adapter so that low build-quality crap lens deserved to be broken!
