I just found out you can get a "Reverse Mount Macro Adapter" that'll do this for you for under $15 on ebay! My GF just surprised me with one... and its freakin awesome. That way you dont have to hold it so steady, and you can adjust your focus a ton easier! Might be able to get some money back for that macro lens now!

every lens should have a small tab on the back that can be moved.. its whats used to shut-down the aperture.. means there's still a way to use it.

also, since your holding the cam in one hand, and the lens to the camera-body with the other.. how do you use the focus ring? or is this a "tripod only" thing?

i wanna try this with my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4
thanks for the tutorial

Thanks, but I can't find how to work it out. I experimented a little with my EOS 350D, but I seem to get only out of focus pictures. How do you choose the focus? Thanks for the idea!!!

good for saving a lot of money, just not really effective holding the lens there. Might cost a bit, but the lens reverser seems like a better idea if you really wanna go down that road.

jo-po-17 In reply to Electric-Phoenix [2007-09-20 13:45:15 +0000 UTC]

on the canon 350 lens, well at least the one i have, there's a small lever on the back, you can push it down, then adjust the aperture really carefully by pushing on the edges with the end of a pencil... the lever is a release. BUT this only works on the older 350s that came with an the olver version of the kit lens, the new one just has contacts on the back. also...i have an older analog pentax, that came with a pretty decent kit lens, and because it's older it has an aperture ring that works besides on "A" so it twas quite easy.

as mahleu said earlier, there are also lens reverse rings that are pretty cheap. i would try your technique, but i use film, so i don't want to risk exposing without knowing it. :/

great tutorial, though.

but,I have a question, does it work with a non-professional digital camera?
I don't have a professional camera, so I want to know ^^

sorry for my very bad english

well neither Cannon 350, nor Nikon 40D are professional cameras. they are just SLR.

SLR doesnt mean that camera is professional.

Anyway, you can do this trick just with SLR, because you can not deatach th lense on compact or SLR-like cameras...

Awesome idea. I should try and apply it to mine. Though my camera is a NikonD80 but the theory should remain the same, just the lens attaching that would be different.

I've also tried converting the body cap into a pinhole lens (us damned crazy artists!

15-55 works well as a pseudo-macro lens even in normal orientation. I haven't yet tried with this lens. tried with the 50mm1.8 with good results.

Only problem is it lets a lot of dust on le sensor.
