Description
This, believe it or not, is a Dalek.A 'Hayakawa' Dalek, to be precise, as drawn by Michiaki Sato for the Japanese translations of the Target novelisations of 'The Daleks' and 'Day of the Daleks', produced by Hayakawa Books. Sato, it seems, worked purely from the descriptions in those books and...well, it shows. Everything described is there, just not in the way it is on screen. The result is a very interesting design that, while perhaps not as threatening as an 'actual' Dalek, has a charm all of its own.
This is my reinterpretation of Sato's design, and the start of a sub-series within the Dalek Evolution project - Project Infinity. This is my excuse to lever in all the 'alternate' Daleks that don't fit with the regular time line - the Movie Daleks, the spider Daleks from 'Fire and Brimstone', etc.
So far, I plan to include the following:
The Hayakawa Daleks
The Aaru movie Daleks
The Mentor Daleks from 'Dalek Empire'
The Leakey spider Daleks from 'Fire and Brimstone'
The Nelvana Daleks from the proposed 'Animated Series'
The Turner Daleks from 'The Dalek Chronicles'
Likely, I'll stop there, since that's already a folder full and I want to limit myself to semi-official variants.
However, if anyone spots a glaring omission on the list, please let me know (though the Dark Dimension SWD and the deformed Ultimate Adventure Daleks are both out - the DDSWD because it's been done perfectly by Mechmaster and the UA Daleks because they are deformed and ugly).

Certainly a very different look to the Daleks, and I can't say I dislike it in any way. You've modeled it quite excellently as well!

There's a really weird offshoot ripoff of the Dalek in the BBC's own: Doctor Who - Mines of Terror if you're still making these

That is . . . I'm not quite sure if that's genius or insanity but I might have to build it anyway!
Thanks for pointing it out!

"KONZETSU SURU!!!"
Well, not quite as snappy, but I'm sure shouted by an angry cyborg it'd still be scary.
Also, it could always be worse: anime-girl style Daleks. "Daburosu-senpai! Konichiwaa!!!"

If anyone ever makes "anime-girl style Daleks", I will hunt them down, break their legs, and feed them to the same mutant rats I keep in my basement that I fed the people who draw Robot Jones as a pony too.

I don't do commissions, I'm afraid. I will occasionally take on side projects if people suggest ideas that I particularly like the sound of, but I tend to be very erratic about getting them done.

-was going to ask about the DAVROS CHAIR ... but of course I cannot submit anything sans a compliment -
It dawned on me I REALLY, REALLY like the eyes on your Hayakawa Daleks - firstly, the "Iris" homage from every Dalek from "Day" to "Remembrance"... though I "like" the look, I admit it was a daft afterthought and made the Daleks' eyes look like ... a white dot on cardboard.
What you've done here... I dunno if you intended to go the "organic" route (I think in a reply you said you did) and while the eye really looks organic... to me, it also resembles some crystalline kind of fluid with a network of fine metallic wiring (veins?) so, it could also go the machine-route. I just like how you seem to have married the two styles, intentially or not. Kinda up to the fanboy to decide what he likes!
Finally, the Grey Armor / Green Eye Lens thing is really a good combo!
So, Davvy chair on the way? Cant wait to see your take on it!
Best regards,
Eddy

Thanks, as always, for the compliments!
I was going for organic veins in the eye, but since I was essentially using crystal distortion maps on the texture, the result definitely works either way. In fact, I think the crystalline idea fits very nicely - as if they've fixed the structures of their eyes forever, just like their genetics...
Hmm. An idea to conjure with, anyway!
I do plan on finishing the Davros chair I used in one of the Dalek Evolution pieces, but at the moment, I've been focusing on a Transformer I'm building. It's going pretty well and I want to get it finished before I move back to Daleks.

...Now that you've mentioned Davros, I like to think that these guys went in the opposite direction: Instead of having a humanoid in a Dalek chair, their leader is a small Dalek casing on human legs. I refer, naturally, to the "Evil Emperor Dalekor" from that "Japanese Doctor Who" fan-film that's been floating around the 'Net for some time.
"Dalekor, you FIEND!"
Probably not canon, but still way-cool.

This is amazing and brilliant.
I have always been fascinated by the Japanese Target novels, it's like some vision into an alternate universe. Where the TARDIS is red, Liz Shaw stands in front of some great cave paintings, Jo has long hair but is kickass with a gun and the Autons are female...and a bit creepy.
The ideas are there with this Dalek, and I think that in some alternate universe they might have been as scary as the regular Daleks. Their height though may have been a problem, from the covers it looks like a good kick would tip them over.

Thanks! I'm quite pleased with how that sucker turned out. The original design features a lot of external tubes coiled round the arms, which I removed for simplicity's sake, but I don't think that detracts too much.

Nuldon [2012-11-23 02:02:27 +0000 UTC]
Well! This is very novel (hahaha). I've gotta say, I don't know if any prose description could really convey what a Dalek is without going into downright schematic-level detail. Especially if the description's translated from English to Japanese!
It's an interesting design, to say the least. I'm not sure I'd recognize it was if I saw it out of context!

Librarian-bot In reply to Nuldon [2012-11-24 19:48:06 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the basic outline description of a Dalek really doesn't capture the shapes - they're not really the kind of thing you can describe without excruciating detail!

its so cool how your doing every Dalek ever devised, u mentioned a spider Dalek. [link] i don't know who made this, i think it was actually meant for the 2005 series.

Librarian-bot In reply to DaiKaiju-Defender [2012-11-21 13:20:15 +0000 UTC]
It looks as if someone took the Parting of the Ways emperor and used it as the basis of a Spider Dalek. I've see a few people do that. As far as I know, while there was some concept art for a Dalek tank with legs knocking around, they never really considered putting Spider Daleks in, at least not seriously.
The spider Dalek I'm going to do is one based on this image [link]
(They neatened them up for the 'Fire and Brimstone' comic, but you get the general idea...)
