Description
I've been meaning to make this tutorial for a while! This is how I make fursuit eyes. There really isn't a wrong way to do things as long as it looks good, is durable, and provides good vision though, so don't take this as an end-all, be-all method. Experimenting is half the fun of making costumes!
Hopefully the infographic provides enough explanation, but if you have any questions, definitely feel free to ask.
Here are some places to get the supplies needed for these:
• Buckram (paintable fine mesh fabric): [link]
Never bought from this store, but it looks good.
• Plastic sheets: [link]
I have bought from here and I can vouch for the quality. .03-.04 thickness is what I prefer, any thinner and it warps with the heat from the hot glue. Any thicker and it start becoming really hard to cut.
• Suede for eyelids: [link]
My secret to this? Swatches. Buy whatever fur you need for the costume and grab a swatch of the suede you want for the eyelids for a nominal fee. Their swatches are plenty large to get a pair of eyelids from. :3
The acrylic paint can be bought at any craft store, you don't have to go expensive with this. Same with paint pens.

Hi! I'm a total noob when it comes to certain materials and I'm not quite sure what buckram even is! I've seen how good you can see through it and I know you have a link for it, but I want to purchase it in a store or find a good substitute for the buckram. Can this stuff be found in stores, or is there any substitude I could use for this? I'd love any help you can provide. I wanted to create my first fursuit and I'm still learning a whole lot about pretty much everything.

I never really had success finding it in stores, but you might have better luck? It'd be with the interfacing in fabric stores.

It's amazing how much life is brought into the eyes by the white dots. Awesome eyes!
How do you usually create a gradient like that? And what kind of paint do you use?

Can I ask how you were able to paint the buckram without all the small holes in the fabric getting clogged up and making sight impossible?

LobitoWorks In reply to Silverfallingstar [2013-07-08 12:28:45 +0000 UTC]
Just slide a pin through the holes, or blow compressed air. ^^ It also helps if you use paint pens rather than liquid paint, but I have so many tubes of paint leftover from college, I just use that anyway.

Compressed air that you use to clean computer parts?

compressed air? My dad has some of that. At what stage of the painting process would you use it? After its dry or while it feels kinda tacky?

While it's still wet, otherwise it won't do anything.

Probably! I don't do following eyes, so I can only suggest you play around with and find something that works for you

so how did you paint these? because I've tried to paint mine and the paint clogged up the holes
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LobitoWorks In reply to Scardee-Cat [2013-05-02 14:21:48 +0000 UTC]
Just acrylic paint and a paint brush- you can use a straight pin or compressed air to get the paint out of the holes.
It was recommended to me to use Deco Color paint pens, as they don't gunk up the holes, but I have all these leftover paint tubes from college, so I just kinda use what I have!
