“Day 47 of Featuring Creatures, today we discuss the third Alien race that has encountered Estea, the MindFlayers.”
“MindFlayers; [Mahynd-flair-er]”
“Although listed as the third on this, MindFlayers were the first Alien species we’ve ever encountered. First appearing centuries before the Exoverns. These octopus-like parasites have accumulated quite the reputation during their lengthy time here. With many viewing these folk as sadistic and evil creatures. Aside from their reputation, MindFlayers are renowned for their psionic and psychic abilities. Masters of psionic energy, they use their mental powers to dominate other creatures. The fortunate among their victims are slain, their brains devoured. The unlucky ones have their psyches warped, leaving them as mindless slaves with little hope of being rescued. As they arrived here, the majority of the species had made their home in the vast underground of Estea, some residing in Hell itself. The species as a whole are masters of Ancient Magic.”

“Base; [Beys]”
“The most common and most recognized variant of MindFlayers, The Base MindFlayer has an average lifespan of 125 years, with an average height of 6 feet or 1.83 meters. Physically, they are warm-blooded amphibians, who have four tentacles surrounding a lamprey-like mouth. Additionally, these MindFlayers lack the index finger and have a severe sensitivity to bright light. In spite of their lack of notable physical abilities, they are still feared for their great mental prowess and mind-affecting spells that every MindFlayer had at its disposal to take control of its prey, they also frequently employed a powerful mind blast to affect a multitude of foes. Additionally, their abundant psionic powers allowed them to levitate at will, as well as to detect the thoughts of nearby creatures and to dominate or charm any kind of creature in their vicinity. Additionally, there were reports of MindFlayers capable of controlling others by power of suggestion. They were also capable of teleporting themselves to other planes of existence by plane shifting. Socially, Base MindFlayers are rarely alone, typically occupied by two or more slaves for protection. Mind flayer colonies operated as a single hive mind, with control centralized by an Elder, a singular entity that exerted its telepathic control simultaneously over all mind flayers within a radius of 5 miles or 8 kilometers. Individuals are known to be masterminds, both aggressive and elitist, these MindFlayers constantly attempt to sap potential from anything to help forward their goals. However, despite their aggressiveness, MindFlayers are ultimately a paranoid and fearful race, fearing physical harm, detection, and emotions. Although they attempt to conceal their emotions, they have an irrational fear of Humans, which is odd as Humans act as a source of prey to them.”

“Ascended; [Eh-sen-ded]”
“Next up is the second most common variant of MindFlayers, The Ascended. A rare variant, these MindFlayers are often treated as deities by their Base brethren. Ascended MindFlayers have an average lifespan of 250 years and an average height of 9 feet or 2.7 meters. Ascended MindFlayers occur in two ways, from the birth of Base MindFlayers who have gone through unknown forces or when a Base MindFlayers manages to break free from an Elder Brain’s control indefinitely. Physically, Ascended MindFlayers share the most similarities with Base MindFlayers. One difference is their increased number of tentacles and their abnormal length. Moreover, Ascended MindFlayers have their index finger and increased physical strength. An extremely dangerous foe in combat, ulitharids could threaten foes with their powerful mental attacks and long reach, in addition to forming a psionic protection akin to armor. Their formidable mental powers were their greatest weapon. Wielding mind blasts, charms, the power of suggestion, and the ability to dominate the mind of both man and beast, they were extremely dangerous to face in combat. They also possessed the powers to shift planes and create dimension doors. Socially, the Ascended MindFlayers will typically form elite nobility for civilizations separate from Elders. Moreover, these MindFlayers act as renegade MindFlayers, who constantly attempt to overthrow Elders and free their peers from control. Despite this higher moral goal, Ascended MindFlayers have quite the harsh personality, exhibiting much more spite and anger than others of its species. It has an irrational hatred for Humans.”

“Witnesser; [Wit-nis-er]”
“An interesting variant of the already interesting MindFlayers, the Witnesser is believed to be created by MindFlayer parasites inserting into a specific creature, however this creature and origin is completely unknown. These creatures have an unknown lifespan and can grow to be 6 feet or 1.83 meters in diameter. Their bodies are orb-like, with a large eye in the center of its body. Witnessers have multiple tentacles along the top and bottom half of its body, with the top tentacles ending with eye stalks. They are naturally capable of flight and boast an innate resistance to spells and were able to project an antimagic field in a cone in front of them. These traits pair it closely with Gazers. Like other MindFlayers, Witnessers are well versed in Ancient Magic, capable of using mind blasts alongside various eye magic. After stunning or otherwise befuddling its target, a Witnesser would then attempt to attach all its tentacles to its opponent's head so as to extract its brain, instantly killing it. Witnessers have no personality to speak off, only existing as tools for MindFlayer colonies. Out of the other MindFlayers, this variant poses the most questions, as it is an Alien race, but seems to be based on some additional species which is unknown to the entirety of Estea.”

“Elder; [El-der]”
“The strongest variant of MindFlayers, the Elders make a common presence as rulers of MindFlayer colonies. Having an unknown lifespan, Elder MindFlayers have an average size of 10 feet or 3.05 meters. Physically it is a massive Humanoid brain, with an array of tentacles extruding from its base. From what it seems, Elders gain their form and abilities from various other MindFlayer brains, dead or otherwise. It speaks through telepathy exclusively, in which it can communicate from a distance of 350 feet or 110 meters. Moreover, it can sense the presence of other creatures in a range of 5 miles or 8 kilometers. Elders are the strongest of all MindFlayers in terms of spell casting and magic. Although its intellect was of godlike proportions, it's only physical attack was by using its tendrils to lash out at or grapple an opponent. As such, Elders are typically protected by other MindFlayers. Forming the physical and spiritual center of a MindFlayer community, the Elder served as a living library of the community's history, technology, and knowledge, playing an important role in a MindFlayer society. Moreover, its goal was to absorb and control every and all MindFlayers, these MindFlayers are unaware that their personality and consciousness were lost when joining with the elder brain. Their greatest fear and foe are the Ascended MindFlayers.”

“MindFlayers are quite the intriguing species, boasting a vast history of their own, even before reaching Estea. As it stands, several MindFlayers have become parts of other civilizations, however the vast majority remain hostile to most every species, residing deep underground. Those on the surface face great prejudice and fear, but this is far from their greatest concern. As of recently, many MindFlayer colonies have declared war on those MindFlayers on the surface, and the civilizations that house them. Now no major move has been played yet, heck, no battle has even taken place yet, however I believe that something big is going to happen nonetheless. They’re an entire species of masterminds, what they have planned can alter the course of history for the entirety of Estea, Heaven and Hell included.”
