Description Not sure how useful this will actually be, i was kinda all over the place.
I promised *Aakerman I'd do some toon boom tuts, but trying to fit all the tool info in one tutorial is kinda crazy so expect painting, drawing, camera, pegging scene planning etc to all make their appearance in future tutorials. this is just a run through of what Toon Boom looks like.

Thank you for the tutorial on ToonBoom

I searched recently what animation software is available for painting 2D animation and found out PAP and ToonBoon (and a few others). I had no idea how to work in ToonBoom, now I can try something. From your comment above I understand it is possible to import frames from PAP? As existing frame set or separate images only?

I have painted and animated a test in Painter. I thought I could animate something more in it, but Painter is too difficult with longer movies and it's FRM files are huge (900M for 30 seconds animation). I hope TB will allow me to animate something more, if I manage to paint all the frames for I wanted to do a short animation with a painterly feel, like the test I did here: [link] Is it realistic idea for a beginner?

Again thank you for tutorials, I'm going to see them all and with time try to make something.

[This comment window is way too small.]

Your animation is great
It looks ambitious but not an un reachable goal

Yes, you can export from PAP the clean line drawings and it exports each frame in a numbered sequence, then import that sequence into Toonboom for ink and paint. toon boom works in Vectors, so its probably not realistic to get a painterly feel in there. I' not too familiar with Painter, but maybe you can compress the files after if they're big?

i have more toon boom tutorials planned so hopefully will get more indepth but first i have to do all the PAP tutorials.
I do have a painting tutprial for toonboom here that shows importing :>

no the quality is shit, and the player is shit, and the community is shit, and the films are shit

HAHA!
did i mention the quality was shit? cuz it is XD
I had youtube before film came along, and stopped using it way before films launch cuz it was just awful XD

HeatherHitchman In reply to Marker-Guru [2008-09-26 03:01:54 +0000 UTC]

eeeep! blasphomy! lol. well there are ass holes all over the web, some in more places than others. BUT youtube also has a lot of good people on it too with great content. sure the player is shit, but whats the alternative besides da? and on youtube u can use copyrighted music (well they never do anything about it) as long as u "give credit" u can watch the videos in HD now, and the community is shit because stupid parents dont watch what their kids are doing online and they log on and flame it all up.

anyway... im not a huge youtuber, i only have 150 subscribers and thats only because i dated a youtube celerity for a while and he often plugs my channel, believe me, there REALLY IS GOOD STUFF, you just have to look harder is all

anyway my rant is done, im cam studioing right now... hope its working 0_0

what about the constant art thievery on DA? how come that hasnt made you hate this community? its bound to cross over into film eventually. im not trying to piss you off just playing devils advocate here...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marker-Guru In reply to HeatherHitchman [2008-09-26 13:59:27 +0000 UTC]

We moderate our community. youtube doesn't (it relies on reports, and even then, does nothing, we the film team) browse on a regular basis and get violations looked into, as well as reports that actually get seen and dealt with). we have an extensive pre-screening proccess, youtube has none at all. They ALLOW illegal material on their site, Deviantart DOES NOT. Youtube doesnt care about artists rights, Deviantart does.

They don't compare at all.
The art theft on DA is Moderated, reported, and in all cases possible, offending material is removed.

I really cant see how you could compare a garbage heap with no moderation, with a site that takes care of its members so well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherHitchman In reply to Marker-Guru [2008-09-26 17:25:11 +0000 UTC]

weather or not it's true that they do not have a moderation team or a moderator is besides the point. using the reports works for them and i constantly see video getting removed from the site, so the issue does get addressed at times.
dont forget the film community on da is considerably smaller than the community on youtube, so there is much much more to go through and to moderate. you always say yourself that you wish the film community here was more active. yes the site has a ton of crap on it, but you know the same happens on DA, even though the team works very hard to protect us.
sure the site does their best to moderate the "artwork" that blatantly violates DA terms and conditions, but there's another type of content that's making DA comparable to Youtube. lets just call it like it is, this site is being taken over by "myspacers" who just upload random crap. i see all kinds of things on this site that if someone took with them to an interview they would be laughed at, and yet on DA its ragingly popular. that's because of the change in the community, the real artists are being outnumbered slowly but surely. i know DA cant take that stuff down because there's technically nothing offensive or wrong with it, but it's still had an effect on the site.

Im not saying that DA doesnt care, i LOVE DA and i am constantly checking the site out i can't even guess how often im here a day, a lot less than i am on youtube. all im saying is that there is good stuff and bad stuff on both. are you saying that there is NOTHING of value on youtube?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marker-Guru In reply to HeatherHitchman [2008-09-27 01:34:06 +0000 UTC]

I've never seen anything of value on youtube, that isnt offsite, that someones RIPPED and included on youtube.
I'm not talking about perceived "low quality" submission that are intending to be original. I'm talking about actual factual copyright violations that go unremoved. BLATANT ones, I've reported time and time again that don't get removed because its "not a violation".

In reality, there is far more ART than "myspace" type stuff on Da. even if the art isn't "good" its at least attempting to be, and someone is putting an effort I expression. not just holding up a camera to the TV while their favourite clip plays.

I'm sorry, but Youtube is the back alley of the internet, you'll never convince me otherwise. I've spent years trying to see the good in it, and I'm done

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherHitchman In reply to Marker-Guru [2008-09-27 06:23:48 +0000 UTC]

so.. based on what you are saying i guess my work on there is "back alley" as well? as a student you can use copyright music as long as you dont make profit off of it, and iv uploaded my own work that i did when i studied film and animation. but hey, that's your opinion and i guess we will have to agree to disagree then...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marker-Guru In reply to HeatherHitchman [2008-09-27 14:31:08 +0000 UTC]

I'm saying the site is, I posted my film up there as well, but your audience will be people who go there for the crap, not many with a real appreciation. (thanks for putting words in my mouth though)
I think schools who allow/support you using music that you dont get rights to are seriously lacking in giving a modern education to its students as well.that's a major part of film making (sound) and saying "sure take whatever" is irresponsible of a school.

yes agree to disagree.
I am still confused why you would pursue this anyways.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeatherHitchman In reply to Marker-Guru [2008-09-27 19:04:32 +0000 UTC]

i wasnt trying to put words in your mouth, but if you say something about the site as a whole that kinda includes my work too and i find it a little strange that you would say that about it is all. i guess im pursuing this because i wanted to understand why you dislike youtube so much, because im a curious person? especially when it comes to film / video / animation websites

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marker-Guru In reply to HeatherHitchman [2008-09-28 01:49:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, I dont class it as a video/film website i guess, is why we differ.

I know alot of people that use animo, I'd like to try it out but I never see it anywhere to try so i forget XD you should make some tutorials on it :B

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Juubee In reply to Marker-Guru [2008-08-05 11:09:00 +0000 UTC]

haha! I'd love to but have no idea how you record stuff like that. I don't actually have it at home, it's at work only. It's rare to get a copy as Animo is super expensive and works on the basis that you've got internet connection. When you open the software it sends out a message to Animo which then verifies your code before you can open the software.... It happens really fast but it's a pain when all the licenses are used up at work, and all it shows you is "You do not have the permissions to use this."

It'd have been awesome to do though... I wonder if I could? I only really know the basic stuff and some more complex stuff, but it'd be enough to point beginners in the right direction. How do you record the screen? @_@

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marker-Guru In reply to Juubee [2008-08-05 14:52:53 +0000 UTC]

you get a program like Camtasia studio [link] and record your screen while talking to a mic

and that sounds annoying D:

Yay! that was great! Thanks ... You DID say PEG though

Anyway, I think it was awesome, it helps me a lot to have someone show me where all the small things are... I always learn myself everything, but sometimes it takes unnecessary lengths of time.

Do more! I want from PAP to ToonBoom (or is that the AVI one, not sure I get how to get it into ToonBoom, or should I not get it into ToonBoom at all?), paint, ... pegs, camera, EVERYTHING... more more more more
