Description Well, I promised a few people I'd do somethin' like this. I don't actually recommend this way of, uh, doing things, it's just...what I do, which is not necessarily what you should do. See? It's nothing new, either...watercolours aren't as hard to control as most people think! xD

Never the less, I've never seen anyone use pencil and white ink (I love your use of white ink!) with watercolors the way you do. I always used white watercolor with very little water to highlight, and the layering and messiness is horrible. x_x
So credit your genius I will.

This is a great tute, thanks so much for it. I was suprised to know you used watercolours, always thought you worked in pencil for some reason. I might have to try the smaller movements when shading, rather than sweeping strokes. That last panel really does show the different just a few touch-ups make. I also like the effect of outlining in white.

Thanks for giving me a lot of think about with my next piece.

Lovely job on the finished product, and a very enlightening tutorial! I agree, watercolours and not as hard to control as people think. Working small helps a ton, I work pretty small when I do watercolours too. You acheive wonderfully bright colours with the way you work, and watercolour tends to be very mute for the most part as a medium. I think that's because a lot of time people don't bother to build it up like you do... Anyway, great tutorial! (again)

Yeah...I get so many comments asking about how I stop the watercolours going everywhere. But...they only go where you take your brush, right? Unless you're using way too much water...ahh it's common sense. xD

Very nice. If I get a watercolor set I'll have to try this. As of right now I don't like watercolors. xD Eviiill~ (notrly, they're okay)

I wish I would have thought to not use so much water on one of the pics in my gallery. I: I did a watercolor wash and pen on top.. and the teacher was like "OMG THAT'S TOO MUCH BLUE IT WILL SHOW UP!" when almost none of it did except for the few areas it was supposed to, lawl.

Anyways, nice tutorial. -goes to find white pen-

just a question...when i used water to soften my colors..my page got all wet an shait and ugly..and i think it couldnt resist any more water...do you use any type of special paper or something?

Marshroots In reply to wolfsquad [2008-01-07 17:30:50 +0000 UTC]

I use sketchbook paper: [link]
But using actual watercolour paper, or at least something sturdy, will probably help. C:

You do the background last? Interesting...I always presumed doing it first was the right way to go! But then, my watercolours end up in the bin before i finish them, so there is somthing to be learnt here! Lol.

Just one question (forgive me if it's stupid); when you do the bckgrd wash in the top section of your picture, do you run the wash over the ear? Because I just can't control the colour from running into my picture and ruining it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marshroots In reply to NrgRush [2008-01-03 23:16:01 +0000 UTC]

Most people do the background first, and it's the way they teach you at school. I just like to change things about the foreground as I colour it, and painting the background first would restrict that...

Nope, I keep a slight gap between the wash and the character, and fill it in with a smaller brush. I use just enough water that the colour doesn't go anywhere I don't want it to. C:

yeah yeah yeah! i got a few questions! cuz i tried ur tutorial (yes its perfectly understandable!) but there are some things i'de like to know like...:
-Do you let it dry between every step?
-Do you scan the image or do you take a photo of it? cuz i scanned and well...scanner hates me *dies*
-Do you use water-colors in tubes or something else?
-and last, ur not going to delete this right? cuz I've seen that you've been deleting tones of stuff on your gallery and for some reason I can't seem to be able to save this in my documents D8 (dont worry, i wouldn't print it out or redistribute or anything).

oh here's what i managed to make [link] (colors are mostly eaten by scanner ! D8)

And again, NICE WORK!! 8D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marshroots In reply to Kuraime [2008-01-03 04:31:51 +0000 UTC]

Yup! It dries in a few seconds, really fast.
Scan. I keep something colourful, like a photo or a cutting from a game magazine, in the corner of the scanner and scan it along with my painting. It helps my scanner pick up the colours without over-saturating them.
I use tubes and solid cakes: [link]
Heheh! No, I'll leave this one up! Wonder why you can't save it, though...and you're fine to save and print my stuff for your own use if you really want to. C:

Ah, awesome, I'll go check it out right now!

Thank you! 8D

Kuraime In reply to Marshroots [2008-01-03 18:11:44 +0000 UTC]

Ah-haaaa! put a photo in corner when scanning! got it! I might try to re-scan my dog-thinger and re-upload if it works for me too 80.
Hmm I think I'll go for tubes. At my work place we sale a pack of 5 tubes worth 31$ for 5$ (canadian) XD.

And ur welcome btw ^^
