Description Well, I promised a few people I'd do somethin' like this. I don't actually recommend this way of, uh, doing things, it's just...what I do, which is not necessarily what you should do. See? It's nothing new, either...watercolours aren't as hard to control as most people think! xD

Thank you very much for sharing this... dabbling in watercolors has always seemed like a fun idea but I cant seem to get away from what I know the best, graphite. Still, seeing your tutorial gives me hope. It makes watercolor not seem as scary as I once thought.

Ah, I'm glad it does! It really is simple when you get used to it, especially the way I do it. xD Your graphite works are amazing! Definately a lot more skill and patience involved in those! 8D

Thank you for your comment on my work... your too kind!

Its a fine madness this art stuff... again, I'm so grateful to see inside your work and the way its created. I wish I could that for my own work but I don't know how I create most of the stuff I come up with.

I don't know why graphite comes so easily for me, I'm having a heck of a time achieving my own high level of satisfaction with color. Its a healthy dose of sanity to see all your new work, so bright, so colorful, so incredibly beautiful... its wonderful to see an artist work such magic within each piece.

Yey! Every time I look at one of your images, I always wonder how you go about the whole process. Everything always comes out so lovely!

I know this sounds geeky, but my favorite part is always the white gel outline xDDDD I think because it always looks so...straight? If I tried to do that, the lines would be all squiggly c.c

Aaaaaaaaa I can't stop liking your work x3 It's too awesome <3

Marshroots In reply to kkitty23 [2008-01-03 03:48:50 +0000 UTC]

Hee, thanks! 8D
Heh, I love using the white gel pen. Even when I'm not planning to I just...can't resist. xD Heh, I find outlining complicated shapes pretty easy...it's straight lines or curves that throw me! I have trouble going over the lineart for the tails on dragons especially, I hate trying to follow the curve! XD

Eeeee thank you! <3

Thanks! I don't like textured watercolour paper, so I use sketchbook paper. Not sure what brand I have right now, but I'll use anything that's not too flimsy. C:

Wow, thanks very much for the tutorial thing. xD That is amazing. What kind of paper did you use? :3 Normal watercolour paper, or not as grainy?

I can never see the textures in your watercolour, so i'm guessing its flatter than normal watercolour paper.

Out of curiousity, what kind of paper do you use?

Love the tutorial! Easy to understand but still gives the gist of how you use water color. Nice. =3

Sketchbook paper. I'm not sure what brand I'm using right now, but I just buy whatever I can that isn't heavily textured or too flimsy.
Ah, thanks! C:

theSlink [2007-12-28 16:55:08 +0000 UTC]

This will be a HUGE help, thank you!!!

One question though... How do you keep your wash from running onto the subject without the colors intensifying around the hair, etc?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marshroots In reply to theSlink [2008-01-03 03:40:04 +0000 UTC]

Ah, great! C:
I use a small brush, start at the edge of the character and paint away from it. The colour does concentrate around the lineart quite often, in which case I just go over it with a wet brush until it evens out, then redo any lineart I might've rubbed away by doing so. C:

vampiremackenzie In reply to ??? [2007-12-28 16:32:48 +0000 UTC]

MARSHROOTS SECRETS.

*steals and uses*

I never even thought of going over my lines again after the painting process... I just figured they needed to be dark to start with xD Man I'm dumb.

Now I want to go home and paint!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marshroots In reply to vampiremackenzie [2008-01-03 03:37:40 +0000 UTC]

xD
Heh, I have no choice, really. I have to redo the lineart after painting 'cause whetever I started with is pretty much erased by the watercolour. C:
You should! 8D

Marshroots In reply to mosskat [2008-01-03 03:35:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! 8D I'd do that if I didn't know my watercolours would almost completely erase them afterwards. xD I really have no choice about doing the lineart after the colouring, heh!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mosskat In reply to Marshroots [2008-01-03 06:15:06 +0000 UTC]

that's the part that kept baffling me with my watercolours, I suspect I tried inking in afterwards but it never looked as good as how yours did (then again I was... 9? >_>;; might have been due to the lack of skillage) - but enough ranting ! your arts = awesome. o3o

miss-lozpie [2007-12-28 15:54:52 +0000 UTC]

aww I can hear my watercolours pining. I really do too much digital art, I should get back to my watercolours 8) I love seeing how someone else uses them... I never would have thought about using white gel pen, I usually just take back the colour for highlights, but this looks quicker and sharper. I also like how outlining the figure with white really helps it to 'op'. c:

Marshroots In reply to miss-lozpie [2008-01-03 03:33:41 +0000 UTC]

Heheh! Thanks! I take back colour for highlights, too, but I love how sharp gel pens are. C:

Beautiful tutorial. It' simplistic and complete, which is perfect for beginners. However, I have a quick question.
What brand of gel pen? Personally I've never used them before, but I know some quality is better than others. Thanks again for the tutorial.

Thats quite detailed for a walkthrough really. And you're not doing anything wrong, always go with whatever your natural method is, othrwise things might feel 'unnatural' to you and you wouldnt want that would you? Besides, you can see the method works great for you.
