Description Well, I promised a few people I'd do somethin' like this. I don't actually recommend this way of, uh, doing things, it's just...what I do, which is not necessarily what you should do. See? It's nothing new, either...watercolours aren't as hard to control as most people think! xD

Well, you may not think so, but to me this certainly was helpful. Never been to good with watercolours myself. Well, for starters, I've only got the crappy pencil kind. I bet they're not good. Is there any kind of brand you could suggest? Thanks.

But seriously, I really wanna experiment now. You make it look like such a simple process. Guess I'll have to find out. And I always wondered how you inked your pics cos I could never tell if it was black ink or dark pencil lines. You surprised me for sure.

Anyhow, big thanks for submitting this. You get some sleep now. I'm gonna see what sort of mess I can make from following this. I got bad vibes coming from just the thought. Lol! The pic is also most awesome by the way! The little critter looks so squishable.

Thanks again, Marshy!

Oh, look, it's that hot guy again! xD
I use WHSmiths own brand, so it should be easy for you to find some if you want! C: I'm not sure if they sell the solid ones anymore, but they still sell the tube ones I used on that Charizard pic and most of my backgrounds.
It is simple! People just get scared 'cause they ain't used to the water and mess up a few times! xD Ah, I hate using ink, it makes my watercolours look more washed out than usual.
Thanks Dani!

Yep, sexy's here! How ya doin'?

Well, that's handy. Cos I bought some of those the other day seeing as they were going on special offer(at least I think they were ). I had a feeling you were gonna say that you used so overly expensive ones that were way out of my budget and I'd have to put them on my b-day list of something. But hey, no need. But I did manage to get some solid ones which was lucky.

I bet it takes a good bit of practice though to get the hang of it. Guess I'll have to do just that. Hmmm...I'd I just might have to try out your little theory and see what works best.

Anyhow, your welcomes.

Mrrowl!

Awesome! I got mine on offer, too! xD You got some solid ones? D: Could you take a photo of them for me or something? I can never find them!

Just have fun and make a lotta mess! It's the best way to find out what works, eh! 8D

Picture? Sure! [link] Yeah, it was only a little set (They cost £9 I believe), but I did see a few bigger sets there. The set had the usual WHSmith card casing around it, but I kinda threw that away. Still, I'm sure you'll find them somewhere.

Dudymas In reply to ??? [2007-12-28 09:48:36 +0000 UTC]

did it make you go crazy to have to do a single step, then go scan it, do another step, go scan, etc. etc. etc. and put this all together. Thanks for the effort. For me, I found out as I progressed with stuff, the scanner would try to 'help' me out by changing the exposure and gamma up, and thusly made it really hard to keep things looking the same.

Waaaaait a sec... or did you cheat and use a camera?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marshroots In reply to Dudymas [2008-01-03 03:13:14 +0000 UTC]

Heh, yeah. xD My scanner did that a little bit here. It won't pick anything up at all if there isn't strong colour on it somewhere, and it turns the contrast up real high for some reaosn. So I always keep a cutting of some colourful Final Fantasy artwork in the corner of my scanner. It makes a huge difference!

Kira-xs In reply to ??? [2007-12-28 08:35:10 +0000 UTC]

Its very helpful indeed!!

Just one question, do you always use blue or purple to 'shade'?
Or does it depend on the colors?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marshroots In reply to Kira-xs [2008-01-03 03:09:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
So far I've only used blue and purple. I use 'em both on any colour, 'cept not usually blue for red. C:

Temeraire In reply to ??? [2007-12-28 06:57:01 +0000 UTC]

Do you use any of that resistive stuff? For example, rubber cement, to prevent colours from overlapping?

Or you're just very careful, either way.

Nice job!

Marshroots In reply to Temeraire [2008-01-03 03:02:41 +0000 UTC]

Nope, I'm just careful and use small brushes. xD

I'm so thrilled you posted this up, seeing how you work is like seeing how the pyramids were built, I swear I'm boggled!

I think you did wonderfully explaining how you did each step, didnt leave anything out that I could pick out.

I have to try your style out when I get home to my watercolor set. your talent is still amazing though Frankie, never stop drawing/painting!

you did an excellent tutorial and explained very well.

So this is how you do your wonderful art pieces. I have a new set of watercolor paints that I've been DYING to use! I might just have to use your technique, as I am not too familiar with the watercolors....

I'm an oil and acrylics kind of guy.

OOO this is so great to see how you do this! I think your style is really unique and have always wondered how you do it!

Question... How do you make sure the background doesn't go over your image..? Are you just super careful? XD

And, it was quite helpful too. I've been thinking about getting into watercolors and this is a great example of an awesome technique.

Quaylak In reply to ??? [2007-12-28 05:40:22 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I just ran across my watercolors while cleaning the house, and I thought, "hey, I'll sit down and try these out." I also found my watercolor brushes that can hold the water in the brush, and again, thought the same thing. I personally love using water colors, 'cause I'm one of those people who like "layering" when I color, rather than just throwing on colors and praying they do what I want. I like having control, ya know?

Anyway, this was an AWESOME "how to." Not only did it share some of your own experience, it also inspired me to pull out those water colors and "brush up" on my skills. The steps you took made a lot of sense, as I think some have said, and it was very easy to follow and understand through the text and visuals you provided.

That was great of you to share, I hope it benefits people. It sure helped me!

thank you so much for sharing this! I've always marveled at your artwork and wondered how you did it. but you use strictly watercolors, yeah? I mean, do you think using watercolor pencils would work just as well?

thank you again!

curious what kind of gel pen you use? i have one but its so transparent it's really not good for much

Transparent? That's a bit odd. xD The brand I use is Pentel.

I've started to get the hang of watercolor, but this should still help in some aspects. Is thyere any specific type or brand of gel pen you use? Because mine don't work at all on any surface. xD Takes me forever to the smallest mark made without killing the paper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marshroots In reply to punish-the-system [2008-01-03 02:42:17 +0000 UTC]

My gel pens are made by Pentel. If you're having trouble with yours sometimes shaking it up and down for a while or sucking the the end that you put to paper can help! xD

What's the name of the watercolors you use? And what kind of paper? :3
Most of the watercolor paper I've seen is grainy but your art is nothing like that.
